Another example of my obsession with fitting something stupid in one small vehicle bay. This time I wanted to see whether it's possible to make a reasonable chassis for a full size Long Tom gun and here is the result. It isn't much faster than the Long Tom train from the old TROs (okay, on the road it's capable of reasonable speed), it's not better protected, has no other weapons, has to use a fusion reactor of not exactly standard rating and can keep firing for only a limited time, but... it's ALIVE! Umm... Fluff... maybe tomorrow. _________________ The dragon NEVER sleeps!

Hehe... indeed. I was curious whether small vehicle bay could contain an artillery piece of this size that's able to keep up with the heavies and it seems that it can. _________________ The dragon NEVER sleeps!

Compacto Artillery System has been originally developed in 2720 by Brooks Inc. to fight against the limited space on the usual combat drop ships. Normally the mighty Long Tom Artillery piece would be limited for major campaigns with multiple ships taking care of logistics of the multi-part Mobile Long Tom, but the Compacto has managed to put the entire gun and loading mechanism on a craddle-like carriage built entirely around the gun the result is a crab-like flat vehicle that can fit within the same space as the Goblin Tank. In the trials the Compacto barely passed the requirements, but the vehicle has been deemed impractical with SLDF preferring the already proven designs in it's service. The last nail to it's coffin were nonstandard parts and engine which made the support for Compacto a nightmare. In the end Brooks Inc. has used many original ideas from the Compacto in their TAV-1 Thumper.
Bonus: How will our merc unit probably solve it's arty problems, if they ever arise. We'll buy a Hetzer, cut a bigger hole in the front plate to allow the gun to elevate to higher angle and replace the AC/20 with Thumper. Cheap and probably doable for a team of veteran techs that's probably the only thing that's keeping us fighting.
