So this is something that has bothered me for a while now. They have never really addressed the use of AI in the game. So I was wondering if anyone ever uses (or considered) some of the crew for Warships, Jump ships and Drop ships to be AI units. I honestly figured that they should have been added years ago to the game even if they are only just there in name only.
Now if they have in later books then cool. But I would like to see them worked in to the past lore.
I have been working on some rules for something that would fill the void but they are really more there in name only then an actual change to game play. There not meant to be came changing more just a fluff item.
Mostly though I am curious to see what everyone thinks. _________________ Stinger If it's "creepy" to use the Internet, military satellites, and robot aircraft to find a house full of gorgeous young models so I can drop in on them unexpected, then FINE, I'm "creepy". Howard Wolowitz. BBT.

The Wobbies during the Jihad used AI mechs and vehicles.

And don't forget the automated defenses of Terra. Drone Warships can be found in Liberation Terra sourcebooks. _________________ The dragon NEVER sleeps!

I was thinking more along the lines of something like an R2 unit, or a protocol droid (yes I'm using star wars droids as an example) but something like that. _________________ Stinger If it's "creepy" to use the Internet, military satellites, and robot aircraft to find a house full of gorgeous young models so I can drop in on them unexpected, then FINE, I'm "creepy". I think that Ghost in the Shell Tachikoma may be the smallest plausible unit with regards to technology shown so far. Anything smaller is either standard computer level smart, or human brain driven. If anyone, then maybe Canopeans are making silicone pleasure bots with some A.I. semblance, but not much of it. _________________ The dragon NEVER sleeps!

Also in the original MECHWARRIOR RPG book, they talk about robotic factories and mention AI/ROBOT run agriculture tractors and security Robots. They even gave stats for these. _________________ Karagin Only the dead have seen the end of war. - Plato

I guess these would still be quite like a robotic vacuum cleaner A.I. the robotic tractor can independently drive around a preset area and a security robot can drive around the preset route and raise alarm or execute some attack pattern. The same would apply to robotic factories - just a lot of simple robots made to work together when you put in some materials and the assemble you the pre-programmed product with only some maintenance needed in case of an emergency. _________________ The dragon NEVER sleeps!

I don't know were getting close to it now. You can already buy a small r2 that will learn as you control it with your phone. _________________ Stinger If it's "creepy" to use the Internet, military satellites, and robot aircraft to find a house full of gorgeous young models so I can drop in on them unexpected, then FINE, I'm "creepy". They had similar things in the 80s, I had robot that you could program to do simple commands via tethered remote, and we also had the Land Ram like tracked vehicle that you could program to do certain moves and follow a preset pattern etc...
The also have a BB-8 that you can program that will move around via a phone as well. _________________ Karagin Only the dead have seen the end of war. - Plato

The only things limiting AI right now are humanistic concerns, and processor speed, though much more humanistic concerns. _________________ "My Blood is not mine to give, it belongs to my Brothers"

It still needs a few years to get there. That and maybe a few solutions regarding independence for military use. You probably dont want your units to rely on cloud data unless you can ensure that everything is connected securely. _________________ The dragon NEVER sleeps!

Yes, right now. But let's look at game terms. It's a thousand years in in the future. Look at how quick technology has moved since the game was made. Cell phones and tablets were a thing of sci-fi, drones were in the same thought. Now they are common place everyday items. Hell Amazon is trying to use them as reliable fast delivery for goods ordered online. _________________ Stinger If it's "creepy" to use the Internet, military satellites, and robot aircraft to find a house full of gorgeous young models so I can drop in on them unexpected, then FINE, I'm "creepy". Question is will these all work on every planet? I ask because not every planet is going to be 100% like Terra/Earth. There will be differences.
And Drones are cool, but like anything they can be countered with simple technology when used right. Cellular technology, sure that will be around for a while, but what about bone implants that do what smart phones do now? _________________ Karagin Only the dead have seen the end of war. - Plato

Don't forget that the A.I. and computing capacities were not as advanced in BT universe due to some heavy technological regression, so what's possible on main worlds is not available elsewhere. Things like cell phones are not aren't self-contained but they require a rather extensive and vulnerable infrastructure to work. The same goes for the drones. Signal translation and especially extensive satelite networks wouldn't be available (as the invasion force is quite capable of removing them all as it enters the orbit), so you have to make them far more independent and self-contained than current systems, which might not be entirely possible with what's available and rugged enough for military use. _________________ The dragon NEVER sleeps!
