Overview:
As demanded by the 'Mother Doctrine' since 2380 the Terran Hegemony was able to keep its
technological edge over the other states of the Inner Sphere throughout most of its
existence.
Although fielding a lot of mech-types their neighbors also had in their forces, the Hegemony
equipped their mechs with high-tech items unobtainable to their rivals.
The decision to upgrade the venerable Wasp with sophisticated recon-electronics was not made
without opposition. Some board members considered it too light and slow to mount the Beagle
Active Probe but the costs had to be kept down and so an XL-engine was no option.
Nonetheless the new WSP-TH1 marched into the armed forces oft he Hegemony in 2612, almost
150 years after the first appearance oft the Wasp.
Capabilities:
With an endo-steel frame the new Wasp was able to mount a brand new Brandenburg medium pulse
laser instead of the standard model. The added firepower and better chance to hit served it
well especially as the laser was its only weapon now. The removal of the SRM was necessary
to fit a Beagle Active Probe in, giving it its superior scouting ability. Half a ton of
armor was added to toughen this light mech a bit.
Deployment:
The SLDF and the Hegemony's own forces put this Mech into reconnaissance units to supplement
the ?conventional? recon-mechs.
As the Mongoose appeared in 2660 the jump-capability oft he Wasp saved it from being
decommissioned and so both mechs served side by side until the end of the Star League and
the storm that came thereafter.
Variants:
The WSP-TH2 Wasp was build in limited numbers for units incorporating Arrow IV launchers.
Instead of the pulse laser it carried a double mount in the right arm with a standard medium
laser and a target aquisition gear to ?paint? enemies.
The first proposal for the WSP-THX was driven by a Pitban 180 XL , that would have propelled
the mech to over 150 kph. While keeping the armor layout of the WSP-1A it also increased its
jump range to 240m rivaling that of the Ostscout.
