A question that maybe should have been asked days ago, where the answers will now likely come far too late to use them.
Playing on the basic map, which two mechs would present the most even battles? _________________ www.210sportsblog.com

My gut says to keep to 3025 tech as that will present the least variation in capabilities and restrict ranges to a single mapsheet better.
Centurion and Enforcer come to mind.
Warhammer and Marauder (warhammer may be a bit under armored)
Shadow Hawk and Wolverine and Griffin
Phoenix Hawk and Vindicator?

Think I would do either Vindicator vs Enforcer or Vindicator vs Centurion.
The Vindy has a slight range advantage in the former case and a mobility advantage in the latter.
Griffin (1N or 1S) vs Dragon maybe?
Wolfhound vs Panther

Since it wasn't prohibited as an option, IMHO I would suggest that each player have the same mech. If it is the intent to see how a player handles a 1v1 contest with the best tactics and rules knowledge thus judging them the "best" player" in a tournament, then the least number of variables is preferred.
I would suggest a Crusader CRD-3L (p/g 4/5), on the standard battletech map with 4 medeium level 1 buildings near the center, with an extreme temperature condition of +2 heat generated per turn, no ammo dumping until turn 4, sprinting movement mode rule, careful stand rule, and backward level change rule all in effect.
This battle would provide many tactical choices for each player to make during the game; heat level management, when to jump or sprint, when to use torso twisting for firing arcs, when to dump ammo, when to use partial cover instead of firing srms, when to kick rather than firing srms, and many more decisions based on damage/heat levels of both mechs.
I would also suggest not using edge points.

We ended up using the same mechs in 1v1 through all required rounds, with a different mech each round, but each player fielding the same mech. Worked out pretty well I think!
We did use edge, though I'm not 100% sure it mattered much in the end the way it played out. Folks who burned through edge did so because they were having bad dice days. Edge didn't change that in the end. _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator

I didn't like it because just about every battle turned into a dice-rolling contest... _________________ www.210sportsblog.com

That's a valid point. That may be the inherent drawback to the dueling system. I think Battletech may play better to lance v lance with balanced Battle Values, so as to make use of group tactics and playing to the strengths of the units involved. _________________ "I have lived my life trying to be a virtuous man. I think that makes the battles as fair as possible to start. The only other option would be to set a BV limit and let players choose from a set list of mechs, allowing them to adjust P/G to the set BV. That way each player would be also be judged (by winning or losing) on their own mech selection along with actual gameplay. (perhaps choosing a mech that suits their personal gameplay style and strengths.)
Still not a fan of Edge as in my experiences it nerfs/creates crits and near misses/hits and shutdowns. I think it just carries too much weight in affecting the game. _________________ "I have lived my life trying to be a virtuous man. You just described BattleTech, which is ultimately entirely about duce rolling! _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator

This is true, but I've seen my fair share of games played and lost by folks that need 7 and 8s to hit while their opponent needs 9 and 10s. Too many bad dice days!! _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator

Ah, if only the dice were our friends, mine seem too often to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory... _________________ "I have lived my life trying to be a virtuous man. The Dragon admires tenacity, and the code of the samurai upholds it as well." -Minobu Tetsuhara

I was doing a tournament once where someone fell and took a critical hit.
...To their center torso...
...Knocking out their gyro...
It was a hilarious match as it was, and that was the last mech my opponent still had left on the field.
I basically won that round because of a failed pilot skill check. _________________ "I wish I could write as mysterious as a cat." -Edgar Allen Poe"I knew there was something special about you, but I never realized you were really a cat." Wolfwood to a random cat (Trigun)
