Overview:
    (Originally posted in 2002: mordel.net/barandgrill.php?redirect=viewtopic&t=696)

Part of the DCMS rearmament project, the Panther II is an upgrade to the tried-and-true
Panther. With the closing of the Clan wars and reports on numerous modern battlemechs in
the field, Luthien Armor Works (LAW) engineers confirmed a surprisingly obvious trend in
modern mechs. Modern mechs have turned towards higher and higher use of technology, usually
at the expense of survivability. Thus, DCMS issued orders for LAW to deliver a protype that
resulted in what would be called the Panther II.

Capabilities:
The Panther II was constructed with a fortified Panther chassis and appropriately resized
actuators to compensate for the greater mass. The resulting increase in total mass allows
for more armor to be mounted as well as more equipment. Resulting in a more protected design
supporting more firepower. As the Panther II utilizes the same material and general chassis
as the original Panther 9R, the design, construction, and maintenance is easier and cheaper
overall. Similarly, the armor shell of the Panther II is made of Type 3 Starslab armor that
is also an easier to produce and obtain.
Under this 9.5 ton armor shell are several updated parts. First, the Telos SRM rack was
replaced with a pair of brand-new Guided Technologies Streak 4 SRM racks mounted centerline,
which provides the latest in guided missile technologies. These racks are supplied reloads
by a single ton of ammunition, protected in a CASE ammo bay, and providing roughly 12
    reloads per launcher.
Second, the Panther II?s primary weapon is a right arm mounted extend-range PPC. While this
caused problems with the original Panther refits, the expense was spent to mount double
strength heat sinks; The 10 DHSA provide more than enough heat capacity to make the ERPPC
    usable repeatedly.
Lastly, the Panther II integrates a C3 system and an ECM suit into its communication system
and targeting and tracking. The modern battlefield has proven both systems extremely
effective. The C3 allows for impressive unit coordination, and the ECM provides the ability
to jam surveillance or counter enemy ECM.

Deployment:
The Panther II is currently being deployed only by the DCMS to refill the rosters of its
depleted militias and regular front-line regiments.

Variants:
Only one official variant exists the Panther II 9KM. The 9KM is seen as lance leader variant
that removes one Streak SRM 4, the C3 Slave, and 1t of armor in favor of a C3 Master.
