Overview:
As the Raven Alliance continued existing, it came to pass a new/old problem would develop,
the Warrior Caste. Specifically the mentality generated by a single pilot in control of
their own mech or fighter giving a competitive edge. That same mentality can also be seen
rarely in light vehicle crewmen where only a single operator controls tge vehicle. The
Shamash being the poster child of this effect. And while yes the Ravens could build that
hovercraft, they much prefer to be able to fly.
Capabilities:
The Mors Vespa breaks convention in several ways. First and least important it ignores the
old clan system of naming vehicles after war gods. Instead it's named after not so much an
individual species as a common phenotype found on many colonized worlds, the Death Wasp. (Of
which the Terran Murder Hornet is still ranked in the top 2% by lethality)
The next bit of conventional wisdom being ignored is the division of labor between the two
crew members. The normal and sane strategy is to have one person pilot the VTOL while the
other is in charge of weapons and networking. Then there is the Clan way... In this case
piloting and gunnery are consolidated under the control of a single Warrior. The second
seat is then left with network communications and engineering. Often this second crew
member may not even be warrior Caste. Technicians are more then adequate to the task of
keeping the bird flying despite the warriors best efforts.
As for the crafts capabilities, reasonably high speed is combined with a slightly absurd
number of ER Small lasers. Simply fitting in so many lasers largely accounts for the bulk
of this craft. This is also only made possible my incorporating dedicated heat management
systems to the lasers. These systems are prone to overload and burnout. Fortunately
there's a technician on hand to manage the finicky system.
Notable MechWarriors:
Though more exotic systems were considered that could of enhanced the crafts performance,
the extra expense was deemed unacceptable for what is essentially an attritional unit. And
even in accepting that losses will happen the Ravens are as thrifty as ever. Either young
pilots will gain the warrior mindset the Ravens are after, or a warrior too concerned with
honor and glory will cull themself from the genepool without taking a truly expensive piece
of equipment with them.
