Okay, for those of you that haven't been following Chihawk's PBeM game, I have advanced to the final round.

To do so I had to eliminate a Spector, Cyclops, Atlas and Wraith with a Penetrator.

The Spector bounced around and didn't do any damage to me until the Cyclops finished off his opponent and came after the Spector and me. In a questionable tactical move he started shooting at me, allowing the Spector to conintue bouncing around. I had to abandon my tactic of standing still on high ground and killing the Spector by attrition.

The Spector got in a good shot after a change of pilots. I was anticipating the move of the old pilot and the new one got in behind me and opened me up like a tin can. With the Cyclops closing in and me prone it was not a good round. I killed the Spector and the Cyclops got wasted a couple of rounds later by a lucky shot. Ammo and pulse lasers don't mix.

Once I was free to engage the Atlas and the Wraith I took shots at both. My thought was to cripple the Atlas and then stand guard by the disabled mech and peg the Wraith when he came in to finish off the big boy. Unfortunately an untimely head hit took the Atlas out of the picture.

So, I fell back to the same tactic that had worked with the Spector. Stand still on high ground, which removes the intervening terrain and gives the Wraith a max of +2 terrain mod plus movement.

Now, maybe things work a little different in one on one tabletop games, where initiative is the deciding factor, but in simultaneous movement everything is even. These little quick mechs come out on the losing end every time.

The penalties for hauling around a monster engine far outweigh the benefits. In economics alone, the houses couldn't afford large numbers of these mechs. The Penetrator cost arond 7.5M c bills. The Spector , 40 tons lighter costs almost as much at 6.1M c bills. The Wraith breaks the bank at 13.2M c bills and still gives up 20 tons to the Penetrator.

Maybe if these mechs had the right player, but I have yet to see one of these little quick buggers advance to the finals. I hope this message stops the insanity. Give it up, there's nothing to gain by taking a pipsqeak when the object is to fight.

Because the game is still ongoing Hardware can't answer that question.

Each player had 1,557 BV to spend on an Inner Sphere mech and pilot skills from the following record sheet books: 3025, 3050, 3055, 3058, 3060.

Well, if he's like a 2 on gunnery in a mech decked out with pulse lasers then of course the jumping beans would not be hard to hit.

I forgot to mention (from the rules): "The lowest any stat can be is 1, and the difference between your pilot and gunner scores cannot be greater than 3."

So you could easily figure out each mech's most likely P/G score if you wanted to.

And a Penatrator can't get a 2 gunner in that system

I could, but that would require expending more energy on the subject than I am willing to give.

No, you couldn't

Base BV for a Penatrator-4D is 1,385

The multiple for a 2G/5P (which is the lowest multiple you could get for a 2 gunner) is 1.4.

1,385 x 1.4 = 1,939

1,939 > 1,557

I had a Penetrator as well and almost got to the Semis (DAMN YOU PINHEAD!!), and I can assure you he is not a 2 gunner. I still beg to differ about light 'mechs not being good.

In his current setup where you can attack your next rounds opponent after defeating yours, yes, I don't think lights are effective. The truth is they take too long to kill something. And by that time, the other guy wants to kill you first because he doesn't want to deal with your ass jumping all over the place.

So in THIS case, I agree with you. In others, like the race, it remains to be seen. Looks like a lot of heavies and assaults are just pounding on each other while the lights make there way around the map. Maybe that's just the way I see it though.

Yes, I could {figure out the gunnery skill limit given the BV limit and the Penetrators BV value}

I know how to use my calculator.

Following the rules as described it's not possible for the Penatrator 4D to have a 2 gunner. Period.

Bartender: "So you could easily figure out each mech's most likely P/G score if you wanted to."

Customer: "I could, but that would require expending more energy on the subject than I am willing to give."

Bartender: "No, you couldn't."

Customer: "Uhm . . . yes, I could. I know how to use my calculator."

Bartender: "Following the rules as described it's not possible for the Penatrator 4D to have a 2 gunner. Period."

Customer dazed and confused: ". . . check please."

Gangrene, he did that math for you. Given the BV limit we were assigned, there is no way to have a 2 Gunner. Especially considering that the skills couldn't be greater then 2 apart. Meaning he would HAVE to be 2/4. Pull out your calculator and input the numbers.

Pssst!!! Mordel...3 apart

So it's 2g/5p like I show. 2g/4p would be even farther away, 2008 BV

Man, Mordel's missing all the finer points tonight. Honestly now, Mordel, have you been hitting the Bartenders stash?

As my stash is usually at Mordel's it is very easy for him to have some of it.

What were the "finer points" I obviously must have missed too?
