And boy did it...
SUCKKKKKKKED
I went in an open mind. I have not been one that has berated the game until I got to play with it a little. So off to WizKids Exhibit demo game I went. The table and terrain was sweet looking. It seemed to have hope, then I played.
I will not go into all the murky details but it has some serious issues. First when a major weapon system has a range of 12" and some units can move 12", I see a problem. Let see I could either move or fire, not both. If I moved twice I could heat up. Two heat and I am rolling for explosions on a two or less on a D6? Yes I did take damage. I send a unit screaming around the back, but can not fire that turn? Unless I double heat I think, hell I was so pissed by this point I do not remember. So once infantry engaged with a mech, others could not fire at that mech, or the infantry. The pinned mech had to either fight it out, or run for its life. SO with the crap movement this is an easy thing to accomplish. They were using a 3D6, two of one color and the third was different.
I did not finish the demo, I had seen enough. I will give them one thing to their favor, these were supposed to be mainly the crap mechs of the world. But is that how you attract new players? or make sure old school guys do not wonder what the hell a 8" range is worth? I found this out after I was getting ready to leave. It seemed way to easy to pin units and it was a ranged based game reduced to a big melee system, or stand at 6" and blaze away. Some of the new Mechs in the case did look nice and have serious potential. I did not see the dial so I can not tell you much.
Unless WizKids overhauls the rules this game will not win over any of the old schoolers. Also I think new players may get bored with it after some time. So at this time my pocket book is very safe.
AWAD- I give it a D-, terrain was the only thing that prevented the F

Your report is disheartening, AWAD. Despite the premise I had actually hoped clickytech would turn out good. No one wants to see their favorite giant walking robot game turn into something crappy.
Your description sounds a lot like the MK game I played. The ranges were too short and the units moved too quickly.

I think your problem is you went in expecting a click version of BT. It's not. It sounds like a BT version of MK. Basically, anything you know about playing BT is worthless. You have to take the game at its own merits. I expect you did not get far enough into the details of how to play to really understand the strategy. (Whether you like it once you get used to it is, of course, an entirely different matter.)
The two games share the same terminology and some of the same units (hard to believe with the Spider, however), but they don't have anything to do with each other except the historical background. If you want to play MW: DA, forget CBT for a while.

No, it pretty much looked like he said the game play was bad. Move twice and risk blowing up? I guess then the game becomes a slug fest where manuvering means nothing, and terrain strategy is worthless. It also means whoever has the most armor wins, cause all in all it looks like it comes down to 6" of fighting. Toe to toe, no trying to outmanuver a person.
Battletech or No Battletech...it just looks bad.

To me it sounds like you have to know how to use your turns properly. Movement is limited so you make sure that you only attack a figure that has already moved that turn and won't want to risk damage from moving twice in a row. It's really a modified form of initiative. Toe-to-toe slugging is for those who have not figured that out. It's really a tactical decision about when to take risk.

Mordel has decided this thread is "OK" because it deals with an actual experience of playing MW:DA and doesn't bash MW:DA based on rumor or "blind" opinions.
If people replying have nothing worth adding (meaning if all their post adds up to is "MD:DA sucks and I knew it would) then it will be removed under Mordel's guidline of no MW:DA posts.
If people have "mature" insights or questions for AWAD about playing the game you're welcome to post them.

I just looked over the posting policy and didn't see any rule regarding posts that involve MW:DA. Is this some sort of de facto rule?

Gangrene,
It was because every other mention of the game went Nova rather quickly.
In terms of strategy, Mage Knight is not as simplistic a game as I initially thought. There are some very interesting nuances in terms of handling your units, and their attacks. Some of which you only learn the hard way, and others when someone uses them against you and you say, "Oh damn!"
I do however think those folks with a background in Warhammer 40K will more readily adapt to the Mage Knight style.
I don't know if Warner is still reading these posts, but if he is, and if Click-Tech is out by Total-Con, I'd be willing to talk to someone about running one or maybe two events just to expose folks to the system.
Providing I can get ahold of some material, and the rules ahead of time.
Drop me an E-Mail if you know whom I should contact.

MW:DA should be out soon so there'd be ample time for a demo.
Just wondering if it should be in the Miniature's room or the Card Game Room with the other collectable games

You know Pin, if you run a game or two, I'm almost sure I'd play it to at least try it. I try not to pre-judge, so I need to see it myself to dislike it. _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator

As someone that has played Micro Armor, Command Decesion, Flag and the Fury, Warzone, 40K (first two versions), Epic, DBA, DBM, Clan Wars, Disk Wars, and a host of many other minatures games that have been, move then fire, fire then move, fire do not move, move only, hold fire, not enough command points to do anything systems, I can make the call. Yes it takes a different way of thinking and not one I find acceptable to a future high tech game. Also the ranges were not acceptable. If infantry can close inside your guns in one move, there is a problem.
If you read my post I feel it can be redeemed but is a failure as is. Also I mentioned that this may have been the crap units of hell and thus not a good representation. But my feeling was I could defeat many manuver based ideas with tight clusters and being paitent.
It is like Slient Death and Full Thrust, the first is first shooter wins . The other is first shooter has an advantage but has far from won the game.
So with me being kind a punk I disagree with you. I feel they could have done a much better system. I feel they wanted to keep it close to Mage Knight was it was an easy hop from one game to the other.
As a note I like BattleForce and many other do not. It is even better with a few modifications, but that is really a very different system than CBT.
Click a Mech may have its place but it needs to be rules revised today. Not a clone or the same but a better flow of battle.
AWAD- Tanks without gyro stablizers in Micro Armor suck when they have one

Try to contact a MageKnight WARLORD in your area. These guy can tell you more about WizKids programs to promote their games ( Warlords are MK's equivalent to the Commando's Clutch is recruting for CBT ).
davec@wizkidsgames.com is coordinating volunteers, you should ask him.
At http://www.wizkidsgames.com/register.asp you can register as a player or volunteer.
Right nowe they are only recruiting Judges for HeroClix and Warlords for MageKnight.
But i have heard rumours that they will recruit BatlleMasters for MW: DA sooner or later.
Hope this helps, MEX

Well I also played in the demo there. THis was also my first experience playing any of the clicky tech games. Really I had only played it to see what the models were like. I disliked having a tank with guns 2 inches long that could only shoot 14 inches. That was the farthest range I saw. It seems to be a VERY abstracted version of battletech. At least the units deteriorate in ability similar to BT.

CBT is not much better. Just remember that a hex has a diameter of 100 feet !
MfG, MEX
P.S.: Has anyboy calculated how high a BattleMech should be if he is reduced with the same value as the map ?
