If I could win say, 100 million, then I could build myself a castle, do anything I wanted and also buy Battletech and create the game I invented at work today while processing lots of mail from San Antonio. (Judgeing by their addresses and handwriting I estimate at least half the people in that city are illiterate.)
Forget click-tech. What we need is a larger scale game that sticks to the vital basics of wargaming.
First, take the Battleforce stats for the mechs and use them instead of the regular Btech damage rules, but keep the normal movement stats.
Second, make the hexes half as large, but use the regular range and movement, thus making a battlemap on the same tabletop twice as large as before, making larger battles more possible and not so dragging since weapon damage and armor are done with the Battleforce stats, i.e resolved much faster. Also making the use of support weapons such as Arty and Arrow missiles more frequent in games, since the fight area is covers more terrain they can be on the map and fair game for roaming light lances in the rear instead of firing from somewhere past the wall of your gaming room.
Say you have a 3025 Locust on Locust with 2/2 armor and internal, that does 2/1/0 short/medium/ and long range damage. FIgure up hex ranges for different tech levels such as IS 3025, Clan, and IS 3050. So that a 3025 mech's short range is shorter than a Clan mech's short range.
Now shoot the Locust at the other one at short range. Roll 2 6-side dice for the two short range damage points, score a hit on a roll of six for a green/regular pilot, 5-6 for a veteran, and 4-6 for an elite. And likely keep that the same for all the ranges, or use a dice with more sides like a 10 or 12-side.
Have points like the edge points, that each pilot can spend when really needed to score some damage or make the attacker miss his shots.
The Locust has the chance to score two damage points that turn, but both rolls might miss too. When the damage goes internal, movement gets cut and so does the firepower points. Have a basic die roll for whether a destroyed mech is totaled or can be salvaged and for how much repairing a lost armor or internal point will cost in c-bills. Also for how much spare points (spare parts) cost to buy between battles.
Have a simple skill advancing system for pilots. I favor 1 point for scoring an internal hit (1 per target) and 1 point for scoring the killing point of damage. Maybe an extra point for killing a heavy or assault mech. Maybe earn 1 point for every X number of hits made by that pilot. Then a cost chart for skill improvement.
Now, since the hexes are half size, smaller minis are needed. Little plastic ones, LOTS of them. This is what I meant by the true basics of wargaming. As we all know, the best wargame is the one with lots of little plastic pieces to play with and of course to spend money buying. For example, Warhammer 40k Epic scale.
Big battles, lots of game pieces to fondle. That is the most vital element of wargaming.
Aside from the starter set, these pieces could be bought unpainted in random grab bags for collectability. Buy them like bags of toy soldiers. And if that bag of Set 1 - 3025 mechs didn't produce the Atlas you wanted, go buy another bag.
For the serious collector, painted unit sets! Maybe plastic, maybe metal. The 3025 Kell Hound painted mech company set, with nice premade game sheets and some nice unit fluff to read and 12 little painted 3025 Kell Hound mechs in a nice little plastic case, found on the shelf next to the Black Thorns Company.
Put them on detachable bases, color coded to tell which side is which regardless of wether you painted your game pieces or not. These bases should have a clicky thing on them to show when a mech has lost all its armor and perhaps also the skill level of the pilot. And make these bases with unit IDs to help tell them apart. All four of the mechs in A company, 1st lance are mounted on 4 (of the six provided to make room for Comstar and CLan) bases clearly marked A1. The other two lances are on the A2 and A3 bases.
New maps and terrain goodies would be called for. But with this a company fight on 4 Btech maps could become a Battalion fight covering an area twice that size but still on the same table and still be played just as fast or faster since the rules for damage, etc have been greatly simplified and whole companies stats could be recorded on a single zeroxed game sheet (a pad of which are in the starter set)
Custom mechs could just be converted using the handy battleforce conversion rules.
And to lure players into Classic Btech, whet their appetites with nice little ring binder books with pages IDing the mechs, giving their game stats, and some fluff about them. The starter set could include two of these books for the 3025 TRO mechs, 1 for each player.
And then there could be expansion sets for other TRO minis for mechs and vehicles, sets of more plastic bases with new ranges of letters and numbers to allow you to field a bigger army. New Mapsets. And new books for the 3050 mechs, Clan Omnis, 2nd line, 3060 inner sphere, etc.
Basically, I just need to win a nice, large lottery.
So why didn't Whizkids think of this?
And yes, being at work today was very, very boring.

Man, that's a neat site. Makes me wish I would win the lottery.
You ever browsed the site where you can arrange a trip to Russia to see their air museum and fly (not just ride in) one of their fighter jets (any one you want as long as your credit card is good for it)? I'd give you the link for it, but I wiped my favorites list a little while back, dang it. _________________ "Those who beat their guns into plows will plow for those with guns..." -Thomas Jefferson

You can buy a T-72 for about 8,000 bucks. Now getting it here is a differnt story, but if I won the lottery, I would buy enough armor to equip a combined arms mechanized brigade, hire some ex-Soviet troops, and take over some place.
