Distilling your own hooch IS legal in the US--as long as you don't sell it. If you sell it, then you're in trouble.

There's a guy who lives over in Johnston County, NC that has a still and makes his own "corn wine" and just gives it to people. The IRS, the BATF, and the State of NC can't even touch him because he's not selling it.

A couple links:

http://www.home-distillation.com/

http://www.partyman.se/default_pu_engelsk.html

Both in Sweden, but both helpful.

I saw on 20/20 they're even doing classes now on brewing and mixology because of differences in the alcoholic drinks each country produces. I forgot the offical name they gave it though, but it's real college credits. Anyways, you have to design your own brew and go on a trip to a microbrewry, then you get to try and design and make your own brew. If it's good you get an A

Uhhhhh, yeah. In my AP Chemistry class, we used a college-level textbook. During the chapter on liquids, it brought up 'Apple Jack' as an example of seperating liquids by freezing and beer as an example of something dealing with liquids. Even the teacher was kinda surprised by the references.

I mean, yeah it's a college-level textbook, but do they *have* to mention the booze? Either way, the books got ditched last year in favor of books that didn't refer to alcohol.

Thats the problem with schools today too sensitive to issues like that. Back in my day you could paddle a person when they did something wrong with out getting in trouble for it.

I was graduated from high school before you were born so for some reason "back in my day" doesn't seem like the right thing for you to say...and I'm unaware of any state that's allowed corpral punishment of public school students in 30 years...

Oklahoma had it in the late 80's: I saw it when some friends of mine got in trouble. In Texas it is still on the books, and the school district here sends home a packet to the parents to sign each year spelling out the rules and punishments, and if the parents don't sign their kid has to go elsewhere for school. Among the things in the booklet is a policy on corporal punishment. It isn't used hardly at all (I haven't seen it ever) but it is there, which I gladly point out to students when they start giving lip about how we can't touch them 'cause their parent said so. They tend to get quiet real quick when they confirm that yes their parents did sign the packet. We've actually had some parents specifically tell us (in writing no less) that they trust us to do whatever we deem necessary if they child acts up, including corporal punishment. We've never had to resort to it, but having it as an option does help.

Concord High School, Concord New Hampshire, December 1990...

...It was cold, damn cold as I was called into the principle's office. He informed me of my supposed crime and my conviction without trial. The sentence was a beating consisting of 6 hits with THE PADDLE.

I was made to take the position, half bent with my hands resting on the desk. The old man lined up behind me and asked if I had anything to say. I said "Tell your wife I think I left one of my shoes under her bed." The whistling sound as THE PADDLE cut through the air was the old man's reply. Even without the air hols drilled to reduce resistance, the old man swung THE PADDLE like a samuri wielding a sword.

WHACK! was the sound the paddle made as it made contact with my ass. I turned to look him in the eye and said "Is that all you got old man?" THE PADDLE sailed through the air again. WHACK! BEfore I could come up with a witty reply he swung again, with a resounding WHACK! "Thank you sir, may I have another!" I cried.

The old man grunted in protest as his attempts to break my spirit failed. He lined up with another swing, I braced myself and uttered those words "Come on old man, we dont have all day."

WHACK! "I thought you said you were going to hit me. All I'm feeling is this breeze."

WHACK! "You know I've been thinking about buying some real estate. I here the plot of land under your daughter's window is pretty popular."

"Shut your mouth!" the old man yelled. I knew, in that moment I had won. "What's the problem sir? Aren't you supposed to be impartial?"

"Goddamn it, be quiet!" the old man roared as he swung THE PADDLE for my sixth and final allocated blow. WHACK! And I knew our business was over.

I straightened up and turned to look at the old man. "When are we going to begin?" I asked.

The old man tunred beet red and screamed "Get the hell out of my office!"

As I turned to leave, I stopped before walking out the door. I looked at the old man, on the verge of tears, and said with a grin, "I hope you enjoyed it half as much as I did. See you next week."

Wow...I'm surprised it was allowed to that late a date(and apparently /still/ allowed) in places.

I figured in the suit happy society we live in it would have been abolished long ago...

And in Yankeedom no less. Damn Yankees and their abusive ways. In these parts we let our children run wild and free because, as the Good Book says, let your children run wild and free. And my mind was embiggened by the Good Book (Condensed Version TM).

And before you start on my use of embiggened, it's a perfectly cromulent word.

A lot of places are perfectly happy to keep doing things the way that they always have, figuring no one in their community would dare sue. Until somebody does sue, that is, but until then, they just keep doing whatever it is they feel like doing. "This is my (whatever it is) and nobody is gonna tell me what I can or cannot do here" about sums up the attitude of these places.

Heck, I've heard that there are actually some people here in the U.S. (south Texas is where the story I heard takes place) that still own slaves. They've cut their slaves off from all access to the outside world, and of course they themselves won't tell their slaves that they were freed oh, about 140 years ago.

I don't know if this story is true or not, but I certainly belive it's possible.

Anybody who has been around the SCA for more than a month has at least the basic recipe for ale, mead, or beer. Heck I have a recipe that starts with cinnamon tea.
