First off...those of you with young kids that like Wizard of Oz....DONT LET THEM WATCH THIS...unless you want them to have nightmares about evil things.
Anyway...on to the review:
The movie takes place 6 months after "The Wizard of Oz", and once again centeres around Dorothy Gale. Since the night of the tornado she has not stopped talking about this place called "Oz" where munchkins and talking scarecrows live....and she very much wants to go back to visit her friends.
Aunty Em is scared for her, and hires the services of a therapist, that is experimenting with electro-shock therapy. Dorothy gets left there. She is about to be treated for the first time, when a storm hits the place she is staying. The power goes, and she somehow escapes, and falls in a river. When she wakes up, she find herself in Oz...in the middle of the Deadly Desert.
Well, she notices a few things different. The area surrounding where her old house had fallen had grown over...the yellow brick road has been destroyed...and the Emerald City looks like ancient ruins.
Anyways...she travels around to see what has happened to the Emerald City, and the rest of Oz. There is some spolier stuff a bit later on.
Overall, the movie is really well done. The claymation and animatronics are really good. The script is decent enough, considering it is more based on the Oz books than the Wizard of Oz movie. Therein lies the spoilers and such.
So, I will give the movie a 8/10...but I do not reccomend it for young kids, though it is in the family section.
SPOLIERS BELOW
Okay...here is some stuff that needs to get across.
The Wheelers-Some of the bad guys of the movie. They have no feet or hands, but wheels...and roll everywhere. They also make screeching noises and are really mean. Quite scary too.
The Witch-She has acquired something like 30 heads, and will change between them. In a few scenes the witch is running around with no head on, quite frigthening for younger people (hell, it was kinda scary to me).
The Gnome King-By wiping people's minds of the memory of Oz, he becomes stronger and less confined to the rocks. Long story there. He is pretty evil.
The thing about this movie is that you learn that Dorothy is actually mental. She is hallucinating when all these things happen. Many key objects in the real world make appearances. Its hard to explain, really, but the gnome king is the doctor that was admining the shock therapy. The witch was his assistant. Anyways...its based on the books.
But this movie is FREAKY, but good. I do reccomend a rental of it.

I remember seeing this at the theatre when it come out years and years ago. Parents were leaving in droves with their little children because it was so frightening. Dot getting shock therapy, come on talk about ruining a great story! As if the flying monkeys weren't scary enough?
Plus it's not even a musical, lamo.
Don't forget Dot always uses people she knows in the real world as characters in oz. In the original the school teacher was the wicked witch and all the farm hands were the lion, scarecrow and tin man.

I really do hope you know that the Wizard of Oz movie was a bastardization of the original story. Return to Oz was in no way meant to be a sequal to the movie...but more or less a reality check in that "This is what the thing SHOULD be."
