This topic came up in reguards to movies, computer games and music items at drill this weekend...the three guys arguing about it had some interesting thoughts on the matter...
Soldier A: If you buy something, it's yours to do with as you please, if you sell it a garage sale, then full profit of the sale is yours, if you give it away, that is your choice and he had other thoughts along this line.
Soldier B: If you buy something it's your's up to a point. If you give it away that is legal, but you can't resell it or copy it, that is breaking the law.
Soldier C: You bought it do what you want with it and to hell with anyone tells you other wise, since they can't make you do what they say since you bought it.
Okay, I know that we had this discussion before, but which of the three soldiers above do think is 100% correct?

Well.. I think property ownership rights and limitations are described in the law books somewhere.. but my common sense answer is A.
I don't think C is right, because there are always limits, ethical, legal, and those based in enlightened self-interest. I don't care if you steal from Microsoft, but scanning rpg books and putting them for download for free in the Net hurts the games companies and in the end all of us, because if they don't stay in business, we will not have anymore toys to play with. _________________ Memento audare semper

No because I was too busy trying not to laugh out loud at them while they argued....

Did you know that Garage sales are illegal, it's just that it's one of those laws they don't enforce, like J-walking.
As far as movies and the like are concerned, you are free to make copies as long as you still own the original and do not sell the copies (this is explain in that FBI warning at the begining of every movie) however it is a federal offence to sell a movie... yeah like anyone gives a damn... As far as everything else if it says "Not for Re-sale" on the package than you can't sell it.... but nobody really cares if you do.

Hey they enforce J-walking outside my high school, which is really stupid since there are only 3 crosswalks around my school, and if you try to cross there you will probably get run over by one of the very many cars coming out of the parking lot. But still they enforce the J-walking.

Just when did they outlaw garage sales? Federal or state level?

It doesn't matter when it was made illegal. No matter what you are doing or where you are doing it, these days it is impossible to go through a day without breaking some law or other that could get you thrown in jail, even if you are being really careful to obey the law.
I saw the law book for my county once, it was the thickness of several websters dictionaries, in small print too. You take city, county, state, and federal laws all together and there's some law somewhere for everything you do that says you're breaking the law by doing it. _________________ "Those who beat their guns into plows will plow for those with guns..." -Thomas Jefferson

I once saw a news report about the stupendous number of laws created each year and the even more stupendous number of old forgotten laws that are still on the books. The report described a scenario where the regular guy in his pajamas steps out of his front door and goes out to the sidewalk to pick up the morning paper and go back inside. The reporter said that in most states that guy just violated at least one law.
The thing about that I really think about is the fact that if you stand against Uncle Sam/Big Brother they really do have the power to destroy you and label you a criminal. Because if the govt really wants to they can prosecute you for God knows how many laws and regulation violations that you have violated in your daily life that you never even heard of. If the govt. ever really wanted to get you, to ruin you, no matter how careful you can try to be, there's still some law somewhere they can charge you with.
For instance, do any of you use Windex glass cleaner to clean your windows? Do you know that the stuff is considered toxic and if disposed of must be disposed of properly in full accordance to all sorts of laws and safety regs for toxic waste that you thought only a corporation had to worry about?
If you throw something into the trash, they don't need a warrant to look at it. So all they have to do to lock me up or hit me with lots of expensive fines is just wait until I throw away my windex bottle, or Formula 409, or an empty can of lysol or air freshener, or an empty container of liquid plummer, etc.
As you know, giving a govt more power is a very risky thing because once they have that extra bit of power they'll never want to give it back. For any govt. there is no such thing as having too much power and control over the people, it is a natural tendency no matter what the form of the government. And there is no such thing as power that never gets used on somebody. And right now my govt. has the power to harrass, jail, and fine me right into the ground anytime it wants to for whatever reason it finds convenient. _________________ "Those who beat their guns into plows will plow for those with guns..." -Thomas Jefferson
