A few months ago I stumbled upon the 3 CD set of Live Scense from New York, a concert from August 2000 that Dream Theater put on. The show was something like 3 1/2 hours long, DT's present to their home town.

A few weeks ago I stumbled upon the DVD of this concert, and a few hours ago I stumbled upon the money to buy it with, so I did.

For those of you who DONT know Dream Theater, they are a progressive metal band that didnt stop progressing when Metal started to die. They are the epitomy of independent rock. They dont get air tme on the radio, they dont release music video's. They simply rely on word of mouth to spred their fame. I personally heard of them last summer when I went to see Steve Vai and Joe Satriani perform at G3. The opener was John Petrucci, guitar player for Dream Theater. I never listened to their stuff, and had forgotten they existed until this last August when I went to see Satriani for the 2nd time. Dream Theater was co-headlining, and I was anxious to see them. I was suprised by the intensity of the music and the performance. And thats all that can explain their playing style...intense. In the last few years they have become a conceptual rock group, following no guidlines in what makes a song popular. They dont care if its popular or not...and the kinds of songs they put out are simply amazing because of it.

The DVD features quite a bit on it. It has the entire "Scenes From a Dream" part of the concert, a series of songs telling the story using music and imagry to propel it along. The firts part is about an hour long, and has a lot of intense music and imagry. The bonus section contains the final 1/3 of the concert, is an hour long itself and only has 3 songs in it. The 3 bonus songs included were part of the hour long encore/finale and include the 23 minute long epic "A Change of Seasons". A gret finish to a great concert. Other bonuses include small vidnettes that gett he fans' perspective of the band, the concert and the overall Dream Theater experience. Most of the 2nd part of the concert is in this section, though it is mostly clips of the concert, and not the full blow produced version.

That is my only beef with this Dream Theater DVD. It isnt the FULL concert like the CD set is. I would prefered to have the whole show instead of the extra "behind the scene's looks".

Oh well. If you like Dream Theater or Hard Rock/Heavy metal I reccomend it.

I started listening to Dream Theater in 1993 I think. I kinda lost track of them though as they aren't very mainstream, and I'm turning into a mainstream kinda guy.

For those of you who haven't heard of them before, I highly recommend listening to some of their stuff on the internet, and then buying it (if you like it, of course!)
