Considering I've had this comp for about 4 years now and I've never bothered to clear any of the stuff I've gotten over the years off of it, I've decided to use the "Rescue Disk" that came with it and restore it to brand-new factory status. The problem with that though it, I'm not sure how to preserve my network settings. I've got a cable modem that is hooked into it, and nothing more. I've been checking for network settings or stuff like that on this computer, but I can't really find anything, so I guess it's just plug and play. Can anyone offer any info on that, or other tips on re-doing my comp?

Yeah, make sure you back up all your personal files. I occasionally wipe everything for no good reason, and over the years I've lost many small files I'd wished I'd kept. Still, I've never lost anything major.

As for your hardware, I'm not really sure. I barely even know what I'mo doing when it comes to hardware and the computer's knowledge (or more often, lack of)about the device and it's use. I believe on my new machine there's still one piece of hardware Window's can't ID. I'd tell it what it is but I don't know either. *laugh*

I can only think of two things that you need to worry about network setting wise:

1) Your drivers for your network card
2) If you have a LAN setup things such as file and print sharing.

I'm not even sure I have a network card, let alone any non-factory drivers for it. I just remember the Comcast guy coming over, plugging the thing in, and then typing a whole bunch of stuff on my "Internet Settings" page really fast. I checked some more and as far as I can tell it's autoconfigure-designed, but I'd hate to have something bite me in the ass after I hit the switch.

you most likely have DHCP, or dynamic settings. Your computer polls the upstream DHCP server, which is your cable modem, which provides your IP address, subnet mask, WINS and DNS server info and then your computer finishes booting.

If you have win 95/98/ME go to "start" "run" and type in winipcfg then "ok" This will bring up your basic network settings, there is a more info button that will bring up all the rest of the settings.

If you have NT/2000/XP then open a DOS screen by going to "start" "run" and typing in cmd then hitting "ok". Once in the DOS screen type in ipconfig /all and this will bring up your network settings.

Good luck.

I was jsut about to suggest the same thing. Though those are pretty much auto configured and you don't really need to enter them in your self.

New as of today: I ran a offline support program that Comcast installed, and it just read me off a list of stuff I can't make heads or tails of.

"Network Connectivity"

No default gateway configured.
No default gateway configured.
No default gateway configured.
No default gateway configured.
Default gateway 68.61.250.1 is reachable.
DNS server 68.60.32.6 is reachable.
DNS server 68.60.32.5 is reachable.
No primary WINS server configured.
No secondary WINS server configured.

I think it's all autoconfigurable, but I'm not sure...

I believe so, but I can't be held responsible if i forgot something . I've never really tried doing this. I have only formatted my hard drive and reinstalled everything, and it all worked.

Good Luck
