READ BEFORE YOU VOTE
I have just finished LOTR (Both, all 3, or all 6 depending where u stand), and I am wondering where to go next?
Wheel of Time - Like Tolkien, Jordan made an entirely new world to play around in. Incredible series of books from what I have heard and read.
The Alice in Wonderland (Through the Looking Glass and Beyond the Looking Glass). Troubled young girl goes crazy and starts living in imaginary world. Not the disney version, mind you.
the Oz books. Dorothy meets the wonderful world of Oz...but unlike the movie...all is not so happy and such. Another one of those freaking weried series that Hollywood destroyed.

Wheel of Time. Start with the first one and you'll be reading that series for a good long time

If Jordan could bring himself to finish the series I`d be happy. It`s getting a bit too long already. But I`ll vote for it.
Other authors you could try:
Stephen R. Donaldson, namely the Thomas Covenant chronicles and the Mordant books. Not that the Gap series was bad either.
Dan Simmons: Hyperion with sequels.
These are more in line with your two last choices, incidentally. At times disturbing stuff, but beautiful and thought-provoking.

Well I enjoy reading and all but I would have to agree with Hardware with thoes choices.
I would Try Battlefield Earth L.Ron Hubbard (before Dyanetics and dont judge the book by the movie there was no way they were goign to pull that off.)
Anything by Isaac Asimov(sp) some 300 to 400 books to choose from.
I know this will be blasphemy, but, try the Robotech series there were much better than the shows (well not much better but somewhat) and there are 21 books in that series now.
Sun Tzu's Art of War if you havent read it.
Anything Tom Clancy wrote is decent.
Terry brooks is great if you want more fantasy. The Magic kindom series is one of the better series you'll find, same with the Sword of Shanarra series.
Dale Brown Day of the Cheeta. Or anything else he wrote.
Starwars "Tales of.." is really good. (There are 3 Bounty hunter, Mos Eisley, and Jabbas Palas) All are about the events that took place DURING the movies and what was goign on to lead outside people up to their being there. Very cool if you havent read them.
David Eddings series.
Wizards first Rule by Terry Goodkind.
In my reading slump (I wasnt interested in reading ANYTHING for a while even old long time favorites).

Fox Trot
Zits
Get Fuzzy

Dilbert
Are all worthy substitutes.
And even in a pinch any of the source books will do  I cant tell you how many times I read about Clan snow raven or one of the other clans or houses to "Pass the Time" so to speak.

The adventures of Harry Flashman, by George MacDonald Fraser. Really, really funny, go check out them at Amazon.com and take a look at the reviews.
The adventures of Felix and Gotrek (Trollslayer series, Warhammer) by William -King. Warhammer is to Tolkien what the spaghetti western is to John Ford movies. Very, very good.

25 pages into the second book I couldn't take any more. Damn whiner. I'd like to find his inner child and kick it's little ass.
Almost anything by Heinlein is a good read. Number of the Beast and Cat Who Walks Through Walls being notable exceptions. If his books don't get you thinking your short of the brain cells to form a critical mass.
Others that make more hits than misses are David Drake, David Brin, Keith Laumer and Orson Scott Card.

That`s not whining. Or if it is, at least it fits in with the rest. The character actually has a reson to complain about things.
There are worse offenders, really. Salvatore`s Drow books got into some heavy whining that really started to put me off after, say, the fifth one. It wasn`t bad as long as he made a one-sentence comment about morality and doubt once in a while, but that`s about the limit for light fantasy. When you look at it, the character doesn`t really have anything to complain about. At least in the opinion of the 15-year old D&D fans who read this stuff.

Raymond E. Feist is a must read if you haven't already read his works.
