I like the RAC/5 version the best. I don't really like AC/2's in any form, so the RAC/2 variant is my lest favorite.

You need more than one RAC/2 on the same mech to be really effective, but one is enough to make people sweat a bit. The RAC/5 variant is likely the deadliest, but I`d like to test it a few times against the others.
Personally I wouldn`t spend money on upgrading a disappointment like the Dragon at all

DISAPPOINTMENT?!! Are you feeling ok?! CHIHAWK! CALL A DOCTOR! WE MIGHT HAVE A CASE OF PLAGUE! *Raven runs over and quickly checks under the neck for bubonic plague. Then he grabs his wrist and checks the pulse.*
Raven, wondering who in hell could consider the Dragon a disapointment!

Its mechs like the Dragon that need upgrades the most. There's not much you can do with mechs that are already good.

Unfortunately true. Considering how many Dragons the DCMS has they can`t afford to ditch the design, they have to do something with it. Melting it down is too expensive, giving it to the dispossessed mechwarrior you hate the most is much better. Same as Assassins and Clints.
I consider it a disappointment since, well, it`s a fast heavy with too little weaponry. When I want fast I say Medium mech, when I want a Heavy mech I say Thunderbolt.

Interesting view. I take another, however. The dragon was meant as a fast, flanking heavy, not a sit down and slug it out heavy. There's a major difference. I guess the dragon isn't your style. It IS my style. I love the dragon. It's not very often that you find a good heavy design thats fast enough to be worth anything. The RAC variant is nice, but I'd rather keep the 6/9 speed. AND, if you switch the LRM-10 to an MRM-10, you gain 2 tons...or you can mess with the system a little and put in 2 MRM-10s...

I agree. If I want something fast then I pick a medium or a light mech. In the absence of XL engines I see no point in having a fast heavy, as its engine size will reduce its weapon load to equal or below that of a medium mech of equal speed. Take the 1N Dragon from 3025. Its weapons and armor are hardly superior to that of the Wolverine, yet the Wolverine can jump 5.

Be that as it may, the 60 tonner can actually carry more stuff moving at just 5/8 than a 55 tonner can...here, make the classes equal with 5/8 speed, 10 heat sinks and 160 pts of armor...
55 tonner: 18 tons of equipment
60 tonner: 19 tons of equipment...the 1N Dragon simply puts 4 tons of its equipment into ammo...it's high speed, decent armor combined with the factits long range weapons makes the Dragon a tough customer...and the Grand Dragon-1G is a decent challenger to the Griffin with the same heat issues and long range firepower, but with more armor and actual close-in weapons...

I like the RAC/2 variant. I use the Dragon as a knife/crowbar to break enemy formations. They can't combat the Dragon at long range, where it will pick away at them, doing just enough damage that ignoring it is dangerous. So something peels off the main force to go deal with it. At this point, people underestimate what they've done. With heavy armor and decent speed, you can't just KILL a Dragon.
So essentially, I use a Dragon to test the resolve, intelligence and experience of my opponents. At wosrt, the Dragon is an annoyance they can never rid themselves of. At best, the Dragon is the ultimate crowbar for prying apart formations.
One other note, why not a low-tech version with RLs? You can use a standard AC for special munitions. It'd be quite cheap too.

My reply was on the established fact that if you give the dragon an XL engine, it could waste anything fast enough to catch it and would be fast enough to run away from what it couldn't kill. Name a mech that the Dragon couldnt kill or run away from...

Actually, I do love the Wraith and have 2 of them in my merc unit. However, The wraith's weaponry would take more than a few turns to penetrate the dragon's armor, and a careful dragon pilot could pump a few shots into the wraith even if it does keep jumping around. I'd say the wraith has a pretty good shot, but don't just write off the dragon...
