well, here i am.... sittin around, just chillin when an old descussion pops to mind. why has the inner sphere developed/copied everything from Extended Range Laser to Targeting Computers but there LRM's still have POS guidence systems.
so i'm thinkin, why not just remove the minumum range on IS LRM's and say they retrofitted and reversed engineered the Clan LRM Ammo. of course this development would be headed by the Draconis Combine who is the power house of missile technologies.
say bump up the cost 50% of LRM Ammo and call it Crackle LRM's.
do you think thats do able? sould have been done a decade ago? or that its to worthless to warrent the research? give an opinion.

I like the idea and think it should have been on of the advancements being worked on by House Kurtia or NAIS...
Given that we have Extend Range LRMs via the Tact Handbook, one does wonder why the normal LRMs weren't imporved by losing or at the least cutting the minimum range in half (3 hexes in stead of 6).

I agree. I think that the minimum range could be cut at least to three without seriously affecting game balance. As it is, the LRM system is almost useless becuase a lot of other weapons are being developed with no minimum range, huge long range, and lots of concentrated damage (Ultra AC/2s, Guass Rifles, Light Guass Rifles, ATMs, ER Large Lasers, ER PPCS, etc). These weapons maintain their usefullness at close range, but the LRM doesn't. Removing or cutting the minimum range would bring the LRMs back into the ring so to speak.

I'm all for making the minimum range on IS LRMs 3...I don't see it as unbalancing in the least.
One thing a friend tried was no minimum range for IS LRMs, but subtracted 2 from the missile chart roll at short range and added 2 at long range. I always thought that idea had some merit....

A min range of three would be acceptable I think for IS LRM launchers. Though I really do not see much of an arguement for not taking it all the way down to 0. After all the things are still twice the weight of a clan LRM.

I too don't see any problem in removing or at least dropping the Min range to 3. And realisticlly speaking, I don't see why there would have to be any added cost in it at all. I mean how much farther ahead can the CLan LRM missle guidance really be after all?
Just my thoughts.

Yeah, that's a good idea. The long minimum range of the IS LRM's should have disappeared or been reduced a long time ago.

Sure, sounds good, but the cost for ammo should be raised. What about all the special ammo types, should they be allowed to use the reduced min range as well? I say not, treat the reduced min range missiles as an advanced ammo type. _________________ If Life is like a box of chocolates, then what would Death be?

The only special LRM ammo that's worth anything is SWARM and Thunder, and I don't think that not having the minimum has a dramatic effect on either of them.

Chihawk is right, I mean it is almost a formality having a min range for them.

Now all we need to do is convince Randall that this a good idea...

Well, it wouldn`t exactly shake the world. A number of LRM boats would be lost while their players try to slug it out at close range, instead of staying at the edge of the battle. The sheer weight of IS LRM systems makes it unlikely as a close-in weapon even if the minimum is removed.

Not going to happen....to quote Warner "The weapons race is over". So I don't think there will be anything changed.

This wouldn't be part of the weapons race...it would a logical advancment of teh LRMs ALREADY in the game NOT a new wonder weapon that pulled from thin air.
