(Note: these are only a handful of encounters that I've had.)

1. I was playing a Solaris match against Ronin one day. I got to fire first on the first round. My gauss took the head off of his mech.

2. One game, it was a two-on-two, with each person getting two mechs. (Note: I manned one of Ronin's mechs for a few rounds so that he could focus on his strategy.) I had an LBX Hollander; he had a Hunchback. Our team-mate had a pair of Venoms. Our opponent had a Crab, a Centurion, and two mechs that I don't remember. I went to flank the opposing lance, while Ronin charged right in. He suffered a head shot and was unable to make his consciousness check for several rounds. When he finally awoke, he was never able to hit with his AC/20; only his lasers seemed to hit. Meanwhile, I was having similar bad luck; my first successful shot was one BB to the head of the Crab, knocking its pilot out. In the end, it was my Hollander (missing both arms) and one Venom agains the Crab and the crippled Centurion. By that time, I had started to roll so hot that the guy playing the Crab left the Centurion as bait while he ran.

3. Martial Olympiad. By luck of draw, I was against Ronin in the Standup Fight. It was down to my 4D Rifleman, my wildly fluctuating mood swings (mental health. lol.), his Kraken (which had run out of ammo even though he was only firing single shot all the way through), and three Elementals. By this time, I learned a shot-grouping technique with the Rifleman that allowed me to land 20 points of damage to the Kraken on almost every round. And Ronin failed almost every attempt to stand. To add insult to injury, I just stepped on his Elementals who tried to divert my attention and fired on him again. Finally, he landed wrong and took out his own gyro. Only match of the entire tournament that I won.

lol. That was going to be my answer too. That was a bit unusual.

I think the question was "What was the oddest thing to happen to *you*?" Each of these stories is about what happened to me, from your point of view.

As for oddest thing that happened to me, I don't know. I think the funniest was when the aforementioned Kraken (Bane to you Clanners) was trying to run with a damaged gyro in order to close to mg range (the Ultras had gone dry) when yet another piloting roll was failed. The mech landed on the back, and the damage resulted in a critical to an ammo bin that still had ammo in it. Since this was the Martial Olympiad, and this battle was lost to me, I actually started laughing and celebrating that I had denied my opponent the kill points by fate of the dice.

A game I had tonight. 3025a Liao lance against a Marik one on a frozen lake, in the middle of a snow blizzard that restricted visibility to a variable number of hexes based in a die roll

(it was an adaptation of the scenario The Lady and the Tiger, from Black Widow Tales)

The Marik lance was an Assassin, and Hermes, a Withworth and a Quickdraw.

The Liao Lance was a Vulcan, Blackjack, Vindicator and Dervish.

We wanted to play it for laughs, to see some ice skating and skidding, and thin ice breaking under the feet of the 'Mechs, but everybody was scared of threading on the slippery surface, so it didnt happen.

The weird thing is that we ended fighting underwater in the final stages. I figured out that in order to cool my Quickdraw, best thing was to jump onto the lake, the ice would break, and I would sink to the bottom. I expected the Capellans to keep watch on the hole I had made waiting for me to come to the surface.

What I didn't expect was the Blackjack jumping into the water, and going after me We had to look up the rules for fighting underwater from a scenario in The Fox Teeth.

Now, the display of light as seen from above through the ice must have been spectacular.
The Blackjack blazed away at my back with his four medium lasers. I took advantage of the Quickdraw feature of fully traversing arms, to fire all my lasers to the rear. As I struggled underwater to get away from the tenacious) Blackjack ( it costs 4 MP to move underwater, and I was very hot when I entered, I could drop at most 19 heat points, so I couldn't get far away fast enough to break contact), we went down below to the deepest part of the lack ( a level 4) ...it was a race to see who would score a critical hit faster, he to my rear torso, or me to his very damaged center torso armor. This went on for four turns, and then the Withworth jumped into the deep end to help me.

In the final turn, the Blackjack shot away my left torso, but we, the Marik side, got even because we punched through the armor in the centre torso of the Blackjack two times. There were no criticals, but we just remembered that there were flooding rules and the 'Mech was put out of action.

Now we wonder how the Blackjack pilot could escape his metal coffin underwater

Let me see, open the hatch, swim to the surface 20 meters above..in the event there was a hole close enough, if the pilot didn't drown, or suffer decompression (scuba sickness)then I wonder how he could survive the hypotermia, the water was at zero degrees!
And once he gets outside.. the temperature was about -20ÂșC , though I suppose the Vulcan could have used his flamer to start a fire to keep him warm

Dragging out the 'Mech to the shore was ruled out because no one of the Liao 'Mechs had hand actuators...well, save for the Vindicator left arm.

Mmmm, do you think the pilot had any chances of surviving ?

Sorry, no-no. The Quickdraw has lower and hand actuators, not possible to flip arms....

Boy, you are in for a rude surprise when you sneak in a Quickdraw from the rear..

The Quickdraw was the first 'Mech ever to be mentioned as able to fire its lasers to the rear, read Technical Readout 3025

true, true, it does have lower arm and hand actuators, but the fluff text specifically states that it can flip its arms, so regardless of the flip arms rule, the text makes it so(thank you FASA designers...)

Sorry, but nope. Here's why

A: Fluff text is worth nil, nada, nothing. It does not pertain to game rules in any way, shape or form. Never has, never will.

B: Pg 5 Battletech Master Rules revised; "These rules supercede all previously published rules....."

Pg 87 REVERSING ARMS "Battlemechs constructed without hand and lower arm actuators in either arm have the ability to flip their arms over...."

so even if you believe that fluff is a rule it is now not legal in the case you state. Sorry to be a rules lawyer, but if someone tried to do that in a game I was playing/running I'd rule against it and give them a die of damage to boot!

Thanks for the sugestion, but I've read it many many many times. The simple fact is that "fluff" is not "rules".

well, thats all fine and dandy, but having slightly specialized mechs does add to the game a little bit(yknow, a little more flavor...). Also, when BMR was published, I dont think they meant that specific rule.

My problem is with the flooding rules. Every hit gets a flooding roll, so any hit could end the duel! A leg, head or CT flooding would have ended it. Sure 10+ isn't common, but it does happen. (Plus the auto flooding when armour is breached.) Interesting Thought: Tandem charge missiles, can they be made torpedos? If so, devastating!

I LOVE the flooding rules. Let's face it, a BattleMech wasn't designed to do underwater combat. Those rules make perfect sense to me and add another level of risk to the game. You want to go underwater? Well, hope you don't die under there.

Both Mordel and I have lousy luck under the water, which may be when we keep going back in....our luck has to change at some point!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

If somebody tries to be a rules lawyer in my games, I'll show him how quick of a draw I have with my gun.

In a word: stuff it

We play by our rules, and FYI, the Quickdraw was agreed to have that special ability by the players before game started, and used the ability several times during the fight.
