Stupid question: I know glued to the TV or the news websites.

With the lull in the fighting due to the sandstorm, and the battle for Bagdad not starting until 2 days I wonder how you in the US and UK are all feeling about this, how things go in the home front.

Just trying to start a conversation. No politics, just purely military stuff.

I haven't been able to keep on it as much as I would like, but from what little I know I am encouraged. Considering that wars of the past are generally measured in years, the thought that the fighting could be over in a month is outstanding.

The one thing that has really bothered me is the incident with the "disgruntled" soldier who threw grenades into the command tent. I notice the media is glossing over his recent conversion to Islam. Its a sad state when we have to worry about our own troops reliability in a time of war.

i've been avoiding most of the TV coverage except for an hour or two each day to stay updated.

i prey that this war is over in months not years. otherwise to many are going to die needlessly on both sides.

as said in 'we were soldiers': the end results are going to be the same except the number of bodies.

may god hurry a quick resolution and have mercy on the dead, from both sides. and i prey and hope Bush will keep his nose out of the generals bussiness.

I'm irked they haven't hung his treasonous ass yet...He deserves nothing more and nothing less than (to paraphrase one of my favorite lines from Young Guns II) "to be led to the nearest convenient place of execution and there be hanged by the neck 'till he be dead, Dead, DEAD!"

And yes, hanging is the proper form of execution for this...firing squads are only for honorable men...

All this should be after he has a proper drumhead trial, of course...we must maintain appearances after all...

He should be given the best defense that can possibly be provided to him as that is his right...

...and then hung by the neck until he is dead.

Last I checked the US didn't look too kindly on treason. And I do believe rolling grenades into your commanders tent is a definite act of treason. Hang him... but by his *****!

There's a question I'd like an answer to concerning that grenade incident. What kind of idiot commands a command post that is so easy to attack? There should be guards, more guards and still a few more guards. Soldiers straying from their post shouldn't be strolling about close to the command tent without being challenged.

If the commander thought he was commanding a boy scout parade or something I'd understand it.

Well, honestly, most U.S. commanders arn't used to the idea of being afraid of their own soldiers. Yeah, there was a problem with fragging officers in Vietnam, but that was a whole other mess.

Placing lots of guards at a command tent is a waste of manpower, especially when it's only the relief crew of the command staff running things at the time. Besides, you don't really have to get too terrible close to frag a tent if you do it right.

Court Martial the guy, and then hang him by the shorthairs... of his *&%$#@*!!!

I like the Object lesson approach. Cut him into pieces, put them in acylic cubes and display them somewhere public, that every one can see. Remind them what Treason gets them....

Treason should be dealt with quickly with the proper death punishment if guilty.

It's not just about being afraid of your own men, it's about leaving a command post unguarded when you're involved in a war. If one of your own can just steal grenades and use them, what could the enemy have done? Just look like a soldier and whistle...

We don't guard command tents at Regimental level here. Of course, we're an Armoured unit, and our CO is always in the center of a circle of tanks and their crews, and we usually have anywhere from a Company or battalion of Infantry with us in the field. In a setting like what they have overseas, it's just not practical to set up security everywhere. And, why draw added attention to an ordinary tent that looks just like a lot of the other ordinary tents?

I've been dropping in, but nobody else has been here. I haven't really been watching the news. I hate the media when it comes to reporting on the military. Part of it has to do with their lack of knowledge about all things military, yet acting like they know everything. Case in point, last night a reporter was talking to an F-16 pilot who had just returned from a raid over Baghdad.

Reporter: "I know he's not allowed to tell us which base he's launched out of, but I can assure you he's from an Aircraft Carrier in the Persian Gulf."

Retired General Guest: "Actually, he's from an Airbase. F-16s belong to the Air Force."

Reporter: "Oh, yes. I keep getting the F-16 mixed up with F-14s and F-117s..." General at the right shakes his head, and mouthes something to the reporter. "I mean F-18s."

*****

I also hate all the discusion of the plans.

"And know, I would suspect they go for the gold here by launching a large thrust forward from here with the 3 of the 7th Cavalry, and try to hit Baghdad tomorrow. And, let's not forget these guys up here!"

Ever heard of secrets guys?

Or, the fact that if nothing is going on they'll send back grainy pictures via video phone of "Troops on the move" and talk at great lengths about nothing, with idle soldiers resting in the background.

If there's nothing going on, shut-up. You're cutting into the Simpsons!

My favorite thing about the reporters over there is seeing the reporters in short sleeves wearing a gas mask. Obviously, no one thought it important to tell the reporters that if the Iraqis hit them with a Blister or nerve agent, a gas mask won't save them, as they can also be absorbed into the blood stream through the skin. Must be the Army's payback for having to put up with them hanging around evrywhere?
