At the Monte Diablo event I had the curse of running two mechs which were adorned with LB-X AC's (the Enfield and the Bushwacker). Actually, both these mechs are pretty good (especially the Enfield). But I was not at all impressed by the LB-X AC's. Really, they kinda suck. The -1 to-hit mod hardly made it worth my time to scatter my damage against heavily armored targets. They were ineffective as "crit-finders," and merely annoyed my enemies instead of driving fear into them. Eventually I switched to regular slug ammo and found it much more effective.
The increased range of the LB-X's is nice, but the scatter ammo is over-rated. I would have preffered a regular AC loaded with the new ammo types (prefferably precision ammo).

This goes against my past experiences...I found the cluster ammo to be VERY usefull on several occassions, particularly against vehicles...

Maybe so, but vehicles are much more vulnerable than mechs are. The same cluster ammo is not very effective when aimed at a Barghest.

You were using them incorrectly.
You first fire the slug to rip off armor, and then you fire cluster to take advantage of the target's missing armor.
I will say that LBx5s and LBx2s are very week when compared to the 10s and 20s.

I also ran a Enfeild at the Monte. And found it very effective. Used as chihawk said it can be nasty.
But to truly effective. pair it with Sagittaire. It rips the armor away. And the Enfeild hunts the crits. We took out 3 mech before a head shot claimed the Sag.

Yes, LB-10X and LB-20X ACs can be VERY effective when used properly. You definitely don't want to use the cluster munitions while the 'mech still has lots of armor. The only exception would be if he took partial cover. You get the -1 and then all those possibilities to roll 6s.
But use the slug rounds to first rip the armor off, and then the cluster to roll all those crits. Works great for 'mechs with Ammo and exposed legs, but will work for any exposed area. Just more effective when you're hitting a hip then a heat sink. _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator

LB-X cluster rounds should be used on mechs that have been hit with gausses and such before hand. If you carry both types of ammo it will be much better than all of one. Even a LB-5X can get around 3 possibles. It needs to be used with other mechs in conjuction.

I would agree that they do kinda suck....when you're on the receiving end.

There was one guy in the group that was a hot roller. We chnged the dice, watched how he rolled, you name it. He just rolled hot, he also like the LBXs, because of his rolling ability. The record was 4 crit possibles of of one shot (12's). Looked at in that light they can be nasty. For mere mortals, design the mech to carry 2 tons, one of shot and 1 of cluster.

If he rolled 4 12s he got 4 head shots--still an amazing achievement.
I saw a guy roll 3 12s and 3 2s with a 20x...using the target's dice!!! The look on the guy's face was priceless.

LBX is the only decent autocannon system, especially compared to the laser systems. I love autocannons but as a direct comparison, lasers are better.
But the LBxs give two things, more range, and versatillity. Cluster helps against soft targets, vehicles and wounded mechs. The longer range slug allows some punch. Only the LB10X is truly superior as it weights one ton less than its standard counter part.
AWAD- LB10X is a staple of many of my home brew designs
