I think it's funny how some of the books try to paint the Clans as being so honor-bound, that their troops are trained (literally from birth) to use zellbringin and that not using it is only appropriate in a few cases and that not using it can be a breech of honor for both sides...except if you're in certain units.

Someday I may have to post my rewrite of the Clans.

I've compared clanners to samurai before, and I'll do so again. Samurai had strict honor rules, but ditched them if it was necessary. The one left standing was the one who could explain why his actions were honorable. And of course, if your army is strong enough you can always kill anyone who dares suggest you aren't honorable

3 words about the honor Myth..... Might makes Right.

Usually the strongest, or the last one standing get to define Honor for a while. If honor was really deserving of capital letters, it would not be so flexible. There are common concepts thru almost all rules of honor. I think Honor covers most/all of these "majority" concepts.

Look at the legends of the american western expansion. Honor was usually personally defined, and personally enforced. a bad man wasn't an evil man, just bad to cross, honor wise.

I understand totally about sacrificing personal honor for victory. That I get. What I don't quite agree jibes with the way the Clans have been portrayed is a unit that by doctrine totally ignores the honor system that their entire way of warfare is based on.

Folks,

The honor "rules" were introduced to balance Clan mechs vs IS mechs.

In a straight up battle, it is pretty much no contest.

A good Clan player should understand how the honor "rules" get broken, and not waste his time worrying about the feelings of his prey. Almost every Clan vs Inner Sphere battle I have seen generates into what is essentially a grand melee, which removes the Clan honor rules.

By the way, I almost always play IS. I enjoy the challenge of killing someone with superior equipment.

See, I am a rabid stickler for Clan honor, but I don't fully see the problem with a unit like Iota, for the simple fact that they are considered Dezgra. Look at his unit composition; all his 'mechs are 2nd line lights. Just being assigned to the unit dooms one's progeny, even as a bloodnamed warrior, from EVER being used for breeding stock.

As a dumping ground for solahma and the honorless, their not adhering to Zellbrigen should hardly be a shock. I would think most clans would have such units. We are talking Solahma here after all. Seeing that they are inherently Dezgra, they get poor quality hand-me-down 'mechs, vehicles and equipment.

Now, if he had claimed to be playing Iota but fielded Hankyu's, Fire Moths and Adders, then I would take issue. I'd also take issue if he fielded anything heavier than a medium in clantech. I would allow some heavies/assualts from TRO 2750 though into the 61st (Fire and Brimstone), since the 74th (Unholy Vengeance) fields star league era aerospace fighters.

Dezgra are not WORTHY of being assigned modern clantech heavy 'mechs, much less assaults. They are barely worthy of being assigned 'Mechs at all, likely why an entire cluster is infantry and another half-cluster is all Star League era Aerospace!

In case you have not figured it out yet I mostly play Ice Hellions Our Zeta Prime Galaxie is mostly freeborns and are constantly going on unauthorized excusions in an effort to prove that the are the equal to trueborns .They get in a lot of trouble. The Flurries are even worse they are basicaly wanna be warriors using old Star League equipments with some minor upgrades (repacing IS FF with clan and replacing some weapons) In our campign we have decided that the are immune to intimidation because they just do not care about themselves to be frightened( So they are going to kill us so what ,that is what we are here for. Today is a good day to die)

I sort of resent that, but I'm 15 and only played once when I was 11, but still managed to take down a Marauder with a Warhammer, not all newbies are the same, some are just stupid. But still, you should really look at all the rules of Zellbrigen before you chase down a Clan light-medium star with assault 'Mechs. And never disobey orders unless you have a death wish or just want to be a glorified hero. A dead one, but a hero nonetheless.
