Heres a good one. I am sure everyone knows about the Charger. and has an opinion ( other than shooting the design crew and nuking the factory. I think that would even be allowed as a loophole in the Ares conventions) and if you post it up in the design reviews it will proably overload the system ( And crash the B & G too boot.). Not really looking for reviews( Or would have posted this in the review Msg.base.) just general opinions about that wonderful walking abortion.

When we first started playing this game in '84, Hardware had my brother and I start a MechWarrior campaign. He told us to go out and get some minis, which we could use to start our unit. I picked up a shadow hawk and my bro picked a charger. Neither of us had played the game as of yet so we had no idea of the stats. When Hardware saw that my bro had picked an assault he said "no friggen way!" then he proceeded to look up the stats for it, and changed his mind...yeah,go ahead, you can use that.....

There are 2 versions of the Charger that are actually pretty decent mechs.
The first is the one with the 4(?) Large Lasers.. And the second has an AC20
Other than that.. The Base Charger is fairly useful in lance battles as long as you are not afraid to get close and personal and kick.. It rips legs off lights and mediums.. and can do OK damage to any Heavies it gets the drops on..
It however does not lend itself to normal Assault tactics, and is VERY difficult to fly well.

Yes, the Charger I was using in Mordel's "sudden impact?" game was a very good design. forgot the numerals, but it had an AC 20 LBX, and like 4 ER mediums, 5-8-0 with masc and a Light engine. Very nice fighting machine.

The thing to remember is that the Charger was a concept unit: Can an assualt mech keep pace with much lighter units?
At the time it was created, IIRC the tech of the Star League was beginning to dissappear. As the 3050 shows, if you plant an XL engine into it then it's a unit to be noticed.
The other main version that I've seen aside from the original is the Laio version in which they give it a much smaller engine. In turn, they get an impressive short range arsenal which (were the mech just a little faster) would make it one of the most lethal urban-combat mods out there.

I also recall a version with a LLas, and 2 MLas at 5/8 with very little armor. Not a grand design for the Capellans' first try at a refit, but still better than the original, I think.
Can't go wrong with either the 3025/3067 short range monsters though. I love'em both.

Yes, but that design comes from two different sources: One from Battletechnology (forget the issue, one of the early ones) as the 'Challenger'. The other source is one of the scenario volumes, either one of the Black Widow ones (my guess is the 2nd one), or one of the Snord ones (less likely). I forget. Main point is: Both of these sources quote these designs as being unique, or almost so (I believe 2 Challengers were refitted - with engines and lasers from gutted Riflemans). So really, if one cares, they should not be allowed for casual play, only for scenarios that feature the history of the fluff. _________________ "Rear armour is defeatist!" - unknown Kuritan Mechwarrior

The SA5 from RS:Upgrades is a good version of the Charger. 4/6 speed with MASC and a Light Engine, LB-20X, 3 ERML and 2 SSRM-6. Maximum armor too.

And Clan players always use the Clan Honor rules too.
One needs to read even a small sampling of posts on messageboards to know that very few pay any attention to information like that. Heck, all one needs to do is check out all the mega-munchy home-grown merc units with all the newest mechs and tech to see this.

I used to have a merc unit that was a true merc unit...and 3 of the 14 mechs in it had some sort of unrepairable damage, including my Stiener Banshee with a permenant gyro hit and a damaged engine that generated 2 heat when walking and 4 when running.
You never see stuff like that anymore, everyone's mechs are always minty fresh and freshly painted.

You can't throw an empty beer can out your window without striking a new mech these days. There's one behind every bush.
The kind of merc units I play with want to avoid permanent damage, but in campaigns everything is possible. The command lance of the Free Rampage company used a Rifleman with severe permanent damage as long as it worked. Some lost head armor didn't actually make it useless as an AA mech. Damaged weapons were replaced with (almost) anything that looked likely, our Thunderbolt even carried a hatchet!

The Banshee was salvage so I guess I shouldn't complain.
And at least it wasn't as bad as the Assassin I had who's ammo feed would jam on a roll or 3 & 4 and would explode the reload salvo on a roll of 2....or my Hatchetman that didn't have a hatchet!
God, I miss playing that stuff...
