I didn't mention it, but most vehicles would be at risk in HE areas. Most wouldn't be water feasbale unless specially prepared for it, and if anything should happen to a tread.... the crew and vehicle are more or less lost. A mech on the other hand, unless the cockpit is breached, SHOULD be able to continue around even with serious damage (barring underwater or Zero-G, the pressure would crush it), but especially in a high heat area. Odds are that unless properly equipped, a tank crew would most likely roast. A mech pilot would already be equipped AND have the training from mech training to deal with heat.

I am kind of beat right now, but I believe someone said attle Armor was not good today? If so, how is it not? You would need special equipment to take out a power armor soldier, most current assault rifles and pistols would be worthless against it. Probably anything that could SERIOUSLY threaten it would be big and clunky for anything unarmored, stuff that would be hard to be used by partisans.... or restless civilians...

There's not really much point in speculating a thousand years ahead. Even if the tech to build a walking war machine becomes available, why assume it's needed? I think we might have automated, independently mobile weapons systems for anything less than battles between space ships. Both ground forces and air forces use drone vehicles. Spy/ECM/ECCM drones, general combat drones and suicide-bomber drones. Battle satellites capable of pinpoint-accuracy orbital strikes with lasers, kinetic missiles or nukes. What use is a tank, mech or wet navy there, except target practice?

And of course, the old infantry that comes in to pick up the pieces. Now upgraded with powered armor, loads of snazzy electronics and self-targetting guns.

>>>Pin, all but your first problem are a matter of scientific advancment, the better science gets the more likly thoughs problems are to be solved.

True, but alot of folks here seem to believe that the technology advances that make a mech possible will not have an effect on other vehicles of warfare.

If you can develop a mech that is completely airtight, then you can also develop a tank that works the same way. They would be incredibly much cheaper to mass produce also.

If you manage to find a way to make a powerplant that can power a mech small enough, then would you not design say a "Mobile Fire Base" that moves relatively slowly but holds enough energy weapons such that anything appearing on its screens would be pretty much toast? That concept is easier to design than a Mech.

Yes a manshaped mech would be able to track its weaponry, but you would need to design a stabilizer to handle the walking and running gait, and I would expect that you would need more than a single operator to drive such a beast. Tanks today have gunners, commanders, and drivers (most have loaders also) because that is what it takes to operate efficiently.

Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of real mechs. I do however tend to doubt that they are in fact feasible given economy of scale.

Most vehicles are not designed to be in HE's. They don't have internal Environmental control system and many don't have a self-righting mechanism.

I certainly won't argue with you on any of that, as you are correct. I personally think that if mechs were to come into existance they would be similar to mobile suits from gundam, only nowhere near as agile.

I'm suprised that noone (myself included) has thought of Quad mechs. We already have thoughs (as shown in last post) and it may not be much longer until they end up armored and mounting guns. Something like that would EASILY go places that most other ground units can't

Well a quad insect design would make far more sense then a biped. Scientists have been using insect like machines for a while now to explore volcanoes. I saw that in a national geographic once. it was a cute little robot.

Actualy the Lumberjack has 6 legs which gives a smooth ride If you watch the vidio you will notice that when it moves it picks up the center leg on one side and the two end legs on the opposite.I wonder what it would be like to convert a lumberjack to BT stats

The biggest problem with the lumberjack is its huge lack of speed. I never saw a top speed for the unit but it was dreadfully slow. And although you can get it to go most places a normal military unit can go it is to slow for fighting purposes. I think it is possible to make it a fighting vehicle but in about 15 years when the technology has allowd for a low end speed of at least 25 to 30 mph. As it sits now it is so slow that ground troops can and will outrun it and flank it. And one or 2 RPG's will spell its doom.

Now can I see it moving supplies. Yes. as a construction unit for a mountain unit yes. Just not for any real military attack purposes.

I'd say Battle Armor/ Protomech type units would be more practicle and more realistic (and also would keep the psych factor)

I think even in CBT the ProtoMechs are BETTER MECHS than a BattleMech !
In this years MO i used ProtoMechs, and in both scenarios the advantages of the ProtoMechs have saved me.
Too bad that i wasnt allowed to use them in last scenario
