Didn't I win Caverns a couple of years ago in an hour pilotting a light mech? What won it? Making my pilot check for running on ferrocrete.

I had every heavy and assault in the game after that poor little mech. You should have won the puppy masher that year.

Was that the year thaty Darryl took that clan thing with the 12 medium lasers, and failed his pilot check (that he never should have had to make but he got brave. I think the quote was, "I only need a 3") on the VERY first turn and dropped into a level 3 pit landing on his head?

For me, it depends on what I am driving. If I am in a Rifleman or JagerMech, then it is Gunnery. If I am driving a Scout 'Mech like a Mongoose or a Jumper like a P-Hawk, then I want the Piloting skills.

I tend to think reverse of most people on this. Since lighter 'mechs tend to carry shorter ranged weaponry, and closing with the enemy negates most of a fast/light 'mechs usefulness, I like to put my best gunners in them so they can sit out at long range and still actually hit things. This is especially true of jumpers that inherently make not only themselves hard to hit, but the enemy as well.

But, because the light 'mech, when deployed correctly rarely takes large hits of damage (if they do, they die anywho) I'm never as concerned with piloting skills on them. Look at it, what's the most common cause of piloting skill rolls in a game; simple. Taking more than 20 damage in a turn. If a fast light 'mech rarely gets hit, what does it need the good pilot for? (rough hexes? Go around. Turning on pavement? Your in a fast 'mech you don't need to go faster.)

On the other side of the coin, a heavy/assault 'mech can usually survive long enough to get it's weapons into optimum position to use them by virtue of it's heavier armor. Also, heavy 'mechs tend to carry large numbers of longer ranged weapons. Because these generate lower targeting numbers you don't need the uber-gunners you do on a light 'mech.

But, because they are slower, less manueverable and as such get hit a lot more, often by 'mechs carrying an equal mass of firepower, piloting becomes very important. 'Mechs over 60 tons tend to take more than 20 points of damage per turn A LOT. As such, you're making control rolls almost every turn. Good pilot really comes in handy then. A 'mech that's fallen down may as well be a pillbox, unless it decides to get up in which case that turn it may as well be a unarmed building.

I voted gunnery. I think that in most situations your going to wind up with pilots who have better numbers for shooting than for piloting. As we all know, the worse the gunnery is the longer the game will take to play.

While I chose "both", I commend your stand-up-for-yourself attitude and agree that forced to choose, gunnery comes first as long as the pilot isn't tripping over his (the mech's) own feet.

If you assume that he is a competant pilot, then I would say gunnery is the most important. If you cannot hit the enemy, you cannot win.

I don't care what class of mech you are piloting, as long as you can keep upright most of the time, gunnery will make the difference.

I have watched average pilots with high gunnery beat hot pilots with average gunnery pretty often. The high gunnery score compenstes for a lot of movement. keep your feet and avoid the situational pilot rolls and you will do fine if you are a good gunner. (you will probably be forcing the other guy to be making more pilot rolls than you do too.)

As far as scouting, you must report before all else. Given the firepower of most mechs in the modern era, 1 good shot is going to cripple most mechs lighter than 30 tons. Get the report out before you get hit. That does not require high pilot skills.

If you play base rules then Piloting does not come in that often. Yeha special situations and comparing some physical attackes but most physical attacks are based off of gunnery. If using MaxTech, then piloting becomes more important. I would take a 3/5 over a 4/4 any day. Ony some many times you can take a 20 pt pounding or get kicked before you are toast anyway. You can easy make 10 attack rolls for one remain standing or move roll.

AWAD- The full body chart with clubs took some super high pilots out of the game
