Here's a matchup for you speedsters. Neither design can take very many hits from the other and survive, although the Jenner has an edge in firepower. Both are fast, althought the Spider undeniably enjoys the advantage in the manueverability department. Who will emerge victorious?

I prefer the Jenner. The to-hits are gonna be extreme, so I might as well give myself a few more available shots.

My personal favorite level 1 light mech is the JRF-7F Jenner It is a cannon variant that drops the SRM-4 for more armour it still runs alittle hot but it has much more armour than the 7D.The Spider gives up to much in the armour and weapon department for its speed and jump.Even with high speed you still need armour.

Whats with all the close matchups these days?
Anyway. I'd have to put my money on the Jenner. Every turn it loses init, the Spider will likely be behind it, but the flips arms of the Jenner means it can fire 4 ML's every turn. Even when you watch your heat you can get away with 2-3 MLs regularly. While fragile, the Spider will suffer ML hits worse, and the speed differential is too low to offset the fact that it'll face twice the firepower it emits. It doesn't have the armor to stand up to that, so barring some lucky punches on the rear table and/or an SRM4 ammo boom, I think the Jenner will win more often than not. Not by a huge margin, though.
Now, compare the Jenner F to the Spider and there's almost no contest. Vastly superior armor, no ammo to explode, that Spider will die.
I absolutely love the Spider's movement though. I can have fun just zipping around the enemy line with one.

The Jenner should be able to take the Spider 8 or 9 times out of ten. Make that a Jenner F and it should be more like 19 out of 20.
Now if we were going for looks then the opposite would be true. The Jenner has to be one of the ugliest 'Mechs around, unique, but still ugly.

I have to agree with the looks. The Spider definitely has an appeal. Unfortunately, I have never had much luck with the Spider, often losing it early in a game/campaign. The Jenner has done alright by me.

I was actually referring to the stock Jenner; I agree the variant you refer to will dominate the Spider, but then again, what fun is fighting a lopsided battle?

The stock Jenner should be able to take the stock Spider, but it is going to be a long and boring battle in general.
They are both limited in range so you are talking 9 hexes or less. So Lets say they are Long range and the spider loses initiative.. smart money says the spider is jumping away, in a direction that the jenner has to turn to get to. Best modifiers 8 +3 jump + 3 target movement not hittable. The Jenner is gonna run but his modifiers end up being worse.
Now lets say the Jenner loses initiative. He has a couple choices.
1) he jumps away.. Meaning he will never hit the Spider AND the Spider can still get behind him.
2) He stands still, and allows the Spider to set the range. This isn't a bad tactic, the spider gets two rear shots needing maybe 7s, and two punches needing 7s... While the Jenner has 4 ML needing about the same... Advantage is awfully close there.
3) and this is my tactic, the Jenner closes with the Spider, walks to a point as close as possible to the Spider which restricts the movement of the spider lowering the to hit and be hit numbers. Again not much of an advantage from both sides.
Once they are close though, if the spider loses intitiative, he stands a chance to hurt badly, as the Jenner should be able to keep him within short range.
Interesting matchup, but it has the potential to never end if you get a 'shy' partner.

The Spider can just use it's superior speed to avoid the battle. So why is it fighting? Does it have a better pilot or some other advantage?

Sometimes you have to engage so that the enemy scout cannot get into range to what you are defending. Running only allows them to 'sneak' in and cause havok or bring in the heavy artillery.
