Since this seems to be the popular thing lately I will throw one out there. When I was playing in college, our lances were always anchored by these two mechs. My friend always had the Berserker, and I always have used the Atlas. Knowing our usual outcomes, I am curious to see the opinions of the rest of you.

Im going to say Atlas. I am guessing you are refering to the 3050 Atlas and the 3055 Berserker (yeah the only one I know). And looking at them I think the Berserker would be hurt by the time it entered LG Pulse range and nearely shredded by the time it closed to hatchet range.

I broke it down this way.

Atlas:
1 Gauss
1 LRM 20
2 ER Large
20 Heatsinks.

Berserker
1 ER PPC
2 LG Pulse
Flamer
Hatchet

With comparable pilots both 1/2 or 2/3 (sorry I have never seen the logic of putting a green pilot in a Assult when that fire power will more than likley help you turn the tide of battle) The Atlas can ride the Heat scale and lay a serious pounding on the Berserker with the Berserker only being able to fire the ER PPC back. granted this would work best for the Atlas in open terrain, with cover I think the Berserker stands a little better chance.

This one depends on how close they get. with any distance the Atlas will take it. If they are in each others grill, then the Beserker would kill the Atlas....

Atlas, hands down. It's tough and mean, carrying simple stuff meant to pound people flat with. Brute force in sufficient quantity coupled with survivability. Thumbs up.

The Berzerker is a gimmick mech loaded with an XL engine, MASC and a hatchet. Specialist mech, vulnerabilities due to high-tech gear, wasted 7 tons on a glorified club. No good for a real battlefield.

The Berzerker is likely to get lucky a few times, but not often enough for the C-bills it costs. Then again, the fun value of a grim close combat between assault mechs is priceless!

Not nessesarily.

With the Bezerker, are you going to swing that hatchet?

If you answer "yes", you're gunna lose.

The Beserker hits with the hatchet and there's a 1-36 you hit the head a pilot chack at +1. The Atlas kicks needing one less to hit and it results in two pilot checks at +1.

Do that 2 or 3 times and the Atlas will come out on top well over 75% of the time, especially if you're using the 7D.

Atlas....... because it looks so cool and the Berserker looks like shit.

On the combat side. I just think the Berserker can not stand up to another well designed Assault Mech. I have run into a ton of them and they have caused me problems, but that is usually since I do not have assaults and I concentrate on killing other mechs. Seems I wait to long and it starts to hurt me...... then I whack with everything and move on.

One note (per Chihawks comment), I think hatchets going to full body chart nurfed the weapon. Maybe making a 2-12 chart with 2-3 and 11-12 being head would be acceptable. Since I have done part of it lets continue on; 4-5 LA, 6 LT, 7CT, 8 RT, 9-10 RA.

So how many newbie’s see the Zerker and play it forever?

AWAD- Nothing like a bunch of 6/9/6 light mechs to piss of a Zerker

Hatchets were never a punch location weapon. Before it was clarified it was one of the most misunderstood rules of the game.

If you look at even the earliest printings of the rulebook you'll see that it says to use the "normal" hit location table; that's the full body one.

An AC/20 does as much damage as the hatchet of the Berserker, and head hits can not be counted on. I would still bet on the Atlas.

I agree, except that hatchets needed to be nurfed. A game should not have "tech" in its name if one of its most powerful weapons is a melee weapon.

Yeah but the weapon still sucks, so it needs to be some sort of upper body system, just less change to decapitate.

AWAD- I remeber when hatchets weighed 0 tons, and every mech had a sword, hatchet or some sort of melee weapon

And when was that AWAD????

I removed the Hatchet on mine and gave it a Mace.... It's more fun to play that way....

So far the general consensus matches most of the reasons why I never gave up the Atlas. Although I do have a few mechs that use hatchets/swords. With an assault swinging that hatchet you can do a lot of damage to one spot with it. I just never liked the general setup of the Berserker. A flamer in the head to 'scare off' the enemy? What good is that? The site of a huge skull with an AC20 next to it is much scarier than a flamer in the head any day.

I agree. The Berserker never had the bad mojo of the Atlas, and flamers suck.

The best thing about a hatchet is it can be combined with TSM. For a 100 tonner this will yield 40 points of damage, which is absurd but fun. Back before they imposed the one-hatchet-per-turn rule I had a 100 tonner that could rule the field.
