Whether you liked the movie or not.. That Cavalry charge at Minas Trinath was the best charge sequence in any movie that I have seen.
The battle sequences in general were all very well done and seamless.
The movie was also very faithful to the books upon which it was based.
It had some differences (a couple glaring that I hated), but in general it was very faithful to the storytelling of the book.
Talen? Did you read the books?

It's only laughable when you don't have any idea why it is cliche, which obviously you don't. 
Tolkien created many of those cliches dude...you are looking at the storyline as if it was written recently and comparing to things that were created in this time period. The Hobbit was released in 1937, the other LOTR books in 1954-55 I believe.
If you look at the movies that way, and also realize that this is actually one movie cut into 3 pieces you'd see a vastly different movie then the one you think you saw.

BS...I swear I have a book right here that is so much older than LOTR and Hobbit even that make all the LOTR seem cliche...let me say. I think its..."The Sarcasimillirion"
Heheee...i guess no one saw through my joke. yeah...theya re honestly three of my favorite movies ever. I read the books when I was a kid and loved them...just really got back intot hem when Fellowship came out. The other day i picked up Vol 1-5 of the History of Middle Earth series, notes and random stuff assembled from J.R.R. Tolkiens notes and stuff. I need to get the Silmarillion, though...I love THAT book.
Yes, I hope Jackson does the Hobbit too...I'd love to see that done. Smaug would be most awesome!

Heehee. Aye, twas all in good fun chap. I am gonna go see it again too. My first attempt was ruined by hecklers and seats that would anger....someone that has bad seat problems....front row...ugh.
So...Ruger...on the 3rd day, look to the West. At sunrise, look for the review...

| I think I have to give the Braveheart battle scenes props over the Return of the King...but they were very good nonetheless. Some parts were a bit cartoon like though (a la Legolas vs. Oliphant...why did he need to use his bow the cut the beast's spinal cord...a knife would do the job better). Still, it was the best of the three movies...the ending really sucked though; it just got really sappy, a major problem with certain parts of all of the movies. Overall, I can only give the trilogy ***1/2 stars, due to the particularly poor showing of the Fellowship of the Ring. Excluding the Fellowship of the Ring, Two Towers and Return of the King rate ****1/2 stars between them.

Well, you did forget the sarcasm tags.
And now that my sore neck is feeling good again, I can comment a bit on the movie too. (The guy who reserved seats for the six of us chose second row for some unfathomable reason. Ouch!)
The sequence where the watchfires are lit was particularly nice. The Rohirrim charge was also impressive, complete with the triple "DEATH!" cry before it. Grond, the battering ram, was perhaps the single most impressive thing on the battlefield, though. You could hear the army of Sauron chanting it's name as a warcry.
The city of Minas Tirith was a bit small to my eyes, but then again, it was only a small outpost originally.
edit, again: the single most touching scene? The death of Theoden brought a tear to my eye, it did.

Hmm...I don't know...an oliphant's hide would be very tough, and Legolas might be stronger than he looks (especially considering how much strength is really needed to be an archer), but with those little knives of his...a bow allows him to put considerable force behind each blow (remember, he fired three arrows into it), driving those things DEEP...

The weapon would also run the risk of getting stuck or broken, something you might not want if it's a precious item. Better use disposable arrows if you have the time to spare for it.

Finally saw The Two Towers this week. Got the extended DVD. Hopefully we will be able to see the third movie soon. (My wife and I were up until 1:30 am watching the DVD on Chrstmas eve. Just couldn't wait.)

Me too. I like the series because it sets a high standard, Finally! The number of Fantasy Movies that simply fail to deliver is scary. It is kind of like the folks doing the Marvel comics movies. Previous to Batman,and LoTR, they were mostly lame efforts at properly matching peoples imaginations. I think the recent movies using the fully developed CGI finally matched or exceeded most people's expectations.
That is why I like these movies. I could care less if a "the hobbit" is done. I would find a few movie based in Dragonlance, Greyhawk, Forgotten Realms and such interesting. Efforts at doing the Lensman, John Carter, and other old book series would be good too.
ther is now a benchmark that all other movies of the genre must meet or exceed.

The only coherent thing I can really say about this movie is that I finally saw how they balanced out the Elf and the Dwarf. Through the other two movies I've been grumbling about how Legolas gets all the cool moves (stabbing one orc with an arrow and then shooting it, 'surfing' down stairs while shooting his bow) and Gimli gets nothing. Then, in the battle outside Minas Tirith, I finally saw how it was countered. Legolas climbed up the Oliphant, killed the soldiers, removed the howdah, and killed the beast, only to surf down its trunk as it died. Then, Gimli said the best line in the entire d*** trilogy, "That still only counts as one!"
In the story which defined the difference between dwarves and elves, the elf is known for his combat prowess and the dwarf is known for his words.

Remember...in most fantasy, elves are usually seen "dancing" over a battlefield, producing fancy moves and what-have-you, but dwarves are known for their brutal efficiency...remember how Gimli and Aragorn just plowed out an opening at the gate of Helm's Deep, or how Gimli held back the orc hordes after the hole was blown in the wall?
A dwarf doesn't need fancy moves...they just want to chop something down to their size...

If you read an online comic strip called PvP I think they have the best review. One of their characters said its a very long movie and another said "This movie is so great there are no good spots where you can go pee."
