Can i ask does anyone know where they got the names for some of the BT planets? Just that some of them are names of towns near where i live,
Ibstock (1 mile from my house!)
Twycross
Hincley
Nuneaton
They are all places within 10miles of my house!

Mythology, founder's old home or things that make it stand out. Just like villages, cities and countries here on Earth.

A lot of them are actual stars; Deneb, Arcturus, Sirius, Altair, Aldebaron (I think), Betelgeuse (which, BTW, is a red giant, and therefore very unlikely to support any inhabitable worlds). That's all I can think of right now, but I am sure there are more.

Except for the names that are real star names, or have a story behing them (like Stein's Folly or New Earth) most of the "filler" names were certainly done by reading an atlas and picking up names at random.
For the planets named after towns and cities in the US, you can find similar names after towns of England or Spain (Leganes and Chapineria, wich are in the outskirts of Madrid), for example.
One very funny is Al Hillah, that is a city in Iraq, I recognized the name when it popped up in the news during GW 2
I'd have preferred a more "dignified" approach to naming planets, but I understand what a chore is to find names for hundreds of planets. I think the end result was quite satisfying and has an exotic feel.
Now... I'm sure some must be made up like Tukkayyid.

I think A Place must have been the last one named...after a long night of thinking of hundreds of planet names they probably just threw up their hands in frustration.

Made up names are used in real life. The city of Novi in Michigan came to be because it was the No. VI stop on the Detroit to (Grand Rapids or Lansing) stage or train route.
AWAD- can you tell I am not a local, I can not even remember the story correctly.

Could be worse, they could have gone throught e National Star Registry, or what ever it is. Not that Im saying that theres bad names in there, but some could be more hilarious than beliveable. "The FedSuns attack on the Wilbur star system...." "Draconis troops rallied to assault the Shmoopy Woopy system today...."

BTW, when we were playing a bit more I noticed that some of those planets/stars are of types that aren't likely to have inhabitable planets at all...

I belive reading somewhere that a lot of the planets are the names of towns in the Chicago area (where fasa was located).

I forget where I heard it, since it was so long ago. But I remember hearing or reading somewhere that Battaletech and/or FASA was originally started here in Texas before moving to Chicago. True or not, there must have been a SE Texan in there somewhere. Look along the Davion-Kurita border on the right and you'll find Beaumont, Kountz, and a number of other SE Texas names.
Now I could see somebody in need of names flipping through an atlas and coming up with Houston and Beaumont. But Kountz, Kentwood, Abbeville, Pattison, Thibideaux, Neosho, Kirbyville, and Bastrop in the old 3025 MIlligan and Kilbourne PDZs seems to say there was a Texan in there somewhere.
Or perhaps just somebody with a pretty good road map collection. _________________ "Those who beat their guns into plows will plow for those with guns..." -Thomas Jefferson
