We all know that BV is a rough system to understand the combat ability of a platform or weapon. But in Max Tech and Merc Handbook, they use them to guesstimate maintenance needs. It is a decent system but I have issues with it and made some changes. The main issue was to make Laser type weapons a big time maintenance head ache.
The reasons are multifold. 1) To prevent everything from being laser boat. 2) In Guerilla or behind the lines type games, ammo or maintenance, which is going to be your issue? 3) Just to jack up maintenance BV so they have to hire techs to keep it all running.
OK trying to justify this with logic is tenuous since this is FASA and it is the far future. But I see lasers being more temperamental, need more calibration, constant replacement of minor systems, and easy knocked out of whack. Plus you would need a more skilled person to handle all this than an AC. AC would be clean it, lube it, and occasionally pull it apart, lathe a new piece, and move on. A less technical person could handle that.
Some of this comes from two things, I know the problems my company is having just making reliable lasers, and when it is freaking cold and hit a bump, my CD player goes nuts.
AWAD- Lasers are better than all other systems; I just look at other ways to balance them
