It would be interesting to know why anyone decides to suicide their own cause with an atrocity on that scale. Might it be some other group than the ETA? It was, as you say, quite different from their normal operations.

Haven't you paid attention to what I posted?
They had been attempting a massacre like this for the past four years. They tried it with huge truck bombs, but they always were caught, last Xmas they tried this very same thing, as I posted, and they finally have succeeded.
The explosive in the backpack bombs used in this atrocity was Titadyne, from the dynamite ETA stole from France years ago.
I expect more massacres like these in the future until all the terrorists are hunted down.

All evidence points to the ETA. 173+ dead, 600+ wounded.

I do pay attention. IIRC Spanish authorities have arrested a few cells of Al-Qaeda suspects in the last couple of years. Might be worth making sure who did what, so the real perpetrators are found.

does that make any other Americans here want to write the President and demand that he offer Spain all the help we can give them?
I just hope Bush doesn't find a way to twist this to his into another grab for Oil like he did 9/11 and the War in Iraq.
MSN reffered to the ETA as Terrorist but put a spin on the story to sound like it was Al Queda behind it and not the ETA, while it isn't impossible Al Queda was behind it it isn't the most likly of possiblities.
Reguardless of who did it this is a HORRIBLE tragedy, and it's proof that the war against Terror is still going on and needs to be taken more seriously by Washington.

It could be a red herring, but lately the news from Spain is that there MIGHT be a connection between Al Qaeda and the train bombings...
Purported Qaeda Letter Claims Spain Bombings-Paper
DUBAI (Reuters) - A letter purporting to come from Osama bin Laden (news - web sites)'s al Qaeda network claimed responsibility for train bombings in Spain on Thursday, calling them strikes against "crusaders," a London-based Arabic newspaper said.

It has been the ETA, the Al Qaeda speculation is just paranoia, it simply makes a more interesting story for CNN BBC and other US and UK media. ETA is a marxist leninist gang, nothing to do with Islamic fanatics. Any cooperation between those groups is... so unlikely to be ruled out. The dynamite is typical of ETA, stolen from French magazines, maybe the chemical lab can trace the batch. ETA had already tried this plan in Xmas day, but botched up the job. Last week their attempt to use yet again a huge truck bomb was stopped. They refined the tactic and targetted a conmuter train, that is an easier target. It doesn't take a lot of brains to execute. Leaving behind a van with some detonators and a casette with Koran versicles that can be bought anywhere seems like a false lead to distract the police. They achieve their objective of carnage while distancing themselves from it. The usual modus operandi from ETA is leaving a bomb in the car used for the strike, to try kill the explosive defusing experts, and to erase fingerprints with the explosion and fire. Abandoning the van intact with the tape is just a way to sow confusion. Simplest explanation is usually the correct one. For now most of the evidence points to ETA _________________ Memento audare semper

Death toll update: 190 dead, 1400 wounded.
Of those at least 100 are seriously injured, fighting for life.
All of them were working class.
Unknown how many children among the casualties.
Thankfully today there was a university strike so there were fewer students onboard.

| My condolences and sympathies for you and your people bud. It is truly sad when a people are brutally murdered by madmen and crowards. No matter who did this, the fact remains that our world is not safe and it is time to take action against those who act in this manner. I am sure my country will stand next to yours as Spain did with us in our time of need.

Vampire I just copied your lead post and posted it on the open forum on NSS with an explanation for why I did it I hope it helps Dan is a little tighter on political statements than Mordel but he is also active Military(USN) and I hope he will understand the gravity of this situation.I may try to post it on HMP but Rick really is down on Politics there so It might have a rough time making it there.

Why can't they be called seperatists? They can be both seperatists and terrorists.
Seperatist just mentions what their goal is (an independent Basque), terrorist describes their methods.
PKK and ETA has basically always been described as seperatists. Doesn't mean they aren't terrorists, which they are.
In the news seperatists have basically become synonym with terrorists over the last decade or two. Most people know that you're talking about terrorists when they say seperatists.

It's clouding the issue.
The basic complaint is that CNN, BBC, Reuters, The New York Times, the Financial Times, will go to absurd lengths to avoid calling a spade a spade. To avoid the truth.
How would you feel if they keep referring to Al Qaeda as "religious fundamentalists" every time, never calling them "terrorists"
Reuters is so obscene as to call this massacre a "guerrilla attack"
Hell, even those commie lovers, and terrorist friends of Amnesty International have just said that this is a crime against humanity.
This day marks another turning point in the war against terror. It's not just about hunting down terrorists, but to win hearts and minds. Changing the attitude of journalism is neccessary to increase the awareness of public opinion worldwide of terrorism, wherever it is, as a global problem and a crime against humanity.
Deprived of publicity and exposed as nothing more than criminals, terrorist will find increasingly harder to find refuge, backers, and recruits.
This is not just about Spain. In this atrocity died people from 12 different countries. It's just one step more towards the universal condemnation of terrorism, wich may give hope this nightmare ends in places like Colombia, Israel, Russia .. to name a few.
The only comforting thing of this tragedy is that public opinion worldwide is ahead of some mass media.
Here in Spain we feel outraged at those TV chains and newspapers, but it's offset because we know the vast majority of people in the US and the UK are with us and are not fooled by their lies.

I don't feel it clouds the issue.
I don't need the label "terrorist" to remind me that groups like IRA, ETA, UVF, RAF, PKK and such are terrorists.
Refering to them as "loyalists" "republican" "seperatists" and such, gives me some more insight about what they are about.

I don\'t have a problem with posting a link to such a petition. While I don\'t want to get into political discussions as such here, I feel we should /all/ be against terrorists |
|
The thread is recieving a similar response there to what it is getting here
