If you look at the 3026 TRO you'll notice that a lot of the vehicles have headlights/spotlights. The headlights are for driving in the dark of course and the spot lights would be to help infantry at night. Or for enemy unit spotting at night or in dark areas(caves, warehouses, etc..) _________________ If ignorance is bliss, then why are you so miserable?

If the illustration has a searchlight we allow people to use them. Sometimes it's worth it, sometimes not.

Based on their rules, I can't think of anytime when a searchlight is good in combat...

Really, I'd rather have night vision/low light amplification systems myself.

Night vision won't work in a cavern. There's no ambient light for it work with. Sensors are only so good. They can tell where something is but not necessarily what lies around you, it or between you both.
You could use the spotlights to blind a unit relying on nightvision. To highlight infantry or other low-lying units.
Though I know the headlights on vehicles are for seeing where you are going in the dark, but what about those vehicles that go like 200+ kph? You be past or inside an obstacle before it really registered with your brain. _________________ If ignorance is bliss, then why are you so miserable?

2 easier to hit an illuminated target at night is GOOD! Especially if it's an enemy assault mech and you're using a cheap vehicle as the light source. You'll risk (and probably lose) one vehicle every round, but the enemy mech is also taking massed fire. Good deal.

A great theory except that according to the rules only Battlemechs can carry searchlights...

I think that one should go into the obviously flawed rule pile.

They only talk about mechs in the paragraph on searchlights, true. That doesn't stop a vehicle from carrying one, does it?

Yes, it does.
They clearly use the word "Battlemechs" in that section meaning that only Battlemechs may mount searchlights. If they intended to include vehicles in that rule they would have used the word "units".

That's a little shady...multiply the shadiness of the language with a bit of common sense and I can see vehicles carrying searchlights.
