Okay, there's a lot of discussion about whichmech is best. As far as I can see mechs can be divided into two rough camps:
Brawlers: Mechs designed to defeat any mech of an equivalent or lighter weight class. Usually a mano-a-mano dueler. Tend to be heavier on the munch factor.
Campaigners: Mechs designed to participate in a military campaign. With logistical support, lancemates and supporting combat arms. Not so heavy on the munch or flashy weapons.
I'd like to hear other people's opinions and if you agree what are your favorites in these two categories?

My favorite "brawler" is my custom Dagon. It's posted here in the custom TRO.
My favorite campaign mech, I'm not really sure to be honest. I like mechs such as the Wolf Trap, the Komodo, and several others just cause they ARENT the best mech, but are useful.

Quite astute my fine sir!
I say death to the munch! Long live the campaigners! (but this is just the opinion of one man, who in the grand scheme of things means nothing )
Ok, the lack of sleep has removed any barriers to the realm of mental instability as you can see. You can blame a teething baby for this.
If I had to pick a brawler, I would have to choose either the Altas of the Daishi. As for a campaigner, it is hard. There are so many choices, so I will pick the Warhammer and the Crusader.

This is a good distinction. LRM boats are the biggest campaigners; in a mano-mano brawl, one to one, LRM boats are generally pretty hapless. In a lance though your LRM boats can generally pick a good spot in LRM medium range with some nice cover and sit there, raining LRMs down on the target of your choice. He may not actually kill anyone, but add in some direct fire from a foreward unit and whatever you're shooting at generally pops.

I am all for mechs designed around a campaign-driven purpose. My favorites would have to be those that greatly excel in one area, such as the Sagittaire(sp?), Salamander, and Komodo. However, any military force is going to need its share of front line brawlers, my favorites of which would have to be the Gunslinger, Highlander, and Gallowglas.

There's a very real division between mechs suited for duels and mechs suited for unit work. It's a bit hard to draw a definite line, as everyone thinks a bit differently.
Still, in my book the mechs with XL engines, specialty items and huge ammo-gobbling guns are most certainly duelists. They're so expensive that you can't afford to lose them and so filled with specialist tech that only house units can hope to keep stocked on spare parts. Spending millions on ammo isn't hard, especially when using the new specialty loads. Of course, the house units consider these units both duelists and campaign mechs.
Mercenaries, on the other hand, must keep to more affordable mechs. Standard engines, lots of energy weapons and a few ammo-dependent weapons. I'll keep a few mechs with hard-hitting newtech in reserve for any duels if I feel like it. A clanner playing at challenges is more likely to be met by artillery and carpet bombing, though. Can't let the abominations think they're humans.
Finery mechs for use as duelists or house mechs: almost anything with an XL and big guns. Some of the newer mechs with Light engines could make nice additions to a merc unit's specialists, like the Javelin with a TC.
Line mechs for mercenary campaign use: anything with standard engine and a mix of weaponry. Thunderbolt, for example.

Very concsie, to bad more people have not stepped up to answer this one.
Brawler- Most home brew stuff, but I think the Flashman fits the bill
Campaigner- Zues, and many others. Has a slew of different weapons for different needs.
But the one that crosses the line well, AWESOME.
AWAD- I can do brawls and like them, but not as my primary or only way to play Btech.

I'm a campaign kind of guy myself, and a fan of the medium mech.
For just smash up BTech games, I carry a Wolverine.
For campaigns, well, my old favorite is still the Whitworth (I even mocked up an upgunned 45 tonner just for campaings). But if I can't use that I'm game for a Dervish or a Trebuchet.

I'm almost strickly a campaigner. I get nailed in just about every brawl I fight.
A Panther in its many forms is a fine addition to my force in campaign.
As are Grasshoppers, Clint, Archer, Grand Dragon, Dragon, Black Hawk Ku, Orion.
Course I'm usually fighting regiment sized battles over planets/continents.
My favourite Aerospace fight is the LCF-20 Lucifer. 23 tons of armour and no ammo. Best strafer I can find for the cost.
