Since i downloaded the drawing board and the mechdesigner (and joining this great site where i can access TRO's) I've gone mech designing crazy, as soon as i turn on the computer i load them up!
I have to restrain myself from swamping your custom mech area with my designs! Currently I've got 3 on there with maybe 1 or two more in the queue.
I admit i have a problem,
Is there a Karensky Clinic around here?

You think you are bad? In the past 6 years I have made almost 18,000 designs. I am the highest poster of custom designs at this time, and I have more in the queue and more to submit. I did lose a very large portion of my designs (I am down to about 2,000-3,000 on paper, files, and in my head) because I lost a full notebook of designs and also lost a lot of computer files from a major crash. Still, I design about 10 units/week.
NOTE: of those 18,000 some odd designs only about 12,000 were mechs, some vehicles and aerospace fighters too.

But here is the real question. How many of those designs are usable, quality mechs. At one point I probably put out 20-30 different mechs, most of them being sheer garbage. The hard thing in designing is coming up with unique designs. I think I only play with 4-5 of my customs. The rest went in the trash where they belonged.

Probably about 500 are really really good designs and these are from a mix of eras, tech levels, and all. Also about 150 are vehicles lol.

Of the 40 designs i have in my folders, only the select few in the queue and on the custom board are worthy of a TRO, i enjoy creating specific mechs, which also have their own faults. I haven't ever really had ago at making that 'ultimate mech' or Gausszilla'.

I have never really gotten over my addiction to designing. I love compiling lists of the designs and comparing and contrasting the various aspects thereof. I have designed a plethora(never thought to use that word in a sentence) of mechs. Moslty 3025 and 3050 IS designs. I have done a few clan designs but find the IS tech levels to be more of a challenge. Also I will compile a list of weapons and components for a given region and design a mech that would be from that region. I like to create mission specific designs over general purpose designs as the general purpose ones can become very similar to each other as you design many of them. The mission specific can as well but as there are many different missions to design for you can design more mechs before you notice the trend of similarity.
I also love creating a background behind the design. Personally, this is what brings the design to life. Without a story and/or background the desiign is merely numbers on paper to me.
So you designers out there, if you can take a little time and throw something together for fluff. Even a little bit of information on the design adds an entirely new level to the design itself. _________________ If ignorance is bliss, then why are you so miserable?

I am a design addict. (not nearely as bad as Ralgith but close Probably 5000 designs) most of them were refits that were ok. Now I only design mech that have a very specific role.

Fluff is what makes the mechs worth designing in the first place.
My favorite custom mech the Renegade REN-1A (which holds the highest score on the custom list ) Has roughly 6 sheets of A4 of fluff behind it, everything from design specifications to preformance reports.
The Renegade is my flagship mech, its named after my callsign, its my favorite wieght (55) and carries my prefered weapon loadout.
Clan mechs are much simpler to make so its not as fun. There is a thin line between a superb mech (Marauder) and an atrocious mech Banshee BNC-3Q or Charger CGR-2A2. The fun part is striking the balance, which takes alot of time and modification (or skill). I love the feeling when you take your custom onto the battlefield and watch it dominate,
Using the example again my REN-1A took down a Lao Hu LHU-3C single handedly,
when this happens you know your onto something good!

My guess would be that 50% of all custom designs are just close copies of official mechs....and and most of the rest are terrible designs.

I always try (and fail miserably) at making 100 tonners, most never make the grade. They either have to high heat or too little firepower.

High heat isnt always a bad thing on a 100tonner
Some of the better canon 100 tonners have a high heat curve, you just don't alpha strike with them.
For instance the wonderful Dire Wolf Widowmaker ride of te famous Natasha Kerensky has a very high heat curve, but is an excellent ride.

Yeah, i always try to make them perfect. I love making a 100ton clan support mech, In real life and campaign it would be to large and expensive to field. But all those LRMs
