Two weeks ago I traveled to Charlotte, N.C. on a business trip and after work scouted local hobby shops for Battletech stuff (no luck on that). I went inside one where local kids were playing Warhammer 40K.
I stayed for a very short while (about 30mins) and watched. Found it to be a cross between B'tech and D&D.
Anybody here played it?

Seen it played, but never played it. It looks like a lot of fun, but it is quite expensive.

Well, assuming that a b'tech figure cost on average $6-8, a company of mechs would cost you about, less than $100 (not counting the paints of course).
These kids had about 40-50 pieces each!

I played WH40K a few editions ago. It's expensive, sure, but they sold the rank-and-file troops as large sets of plastic minis. Only my extra stuff, like officers and such, were made of metal.
Haven't played it since the box after Rogue Trader became obsolete. The background is quite good, though. I still like checking out the fiction once in a while.
Did you know that an Imperial citizen can get off with a light sentence for lesser crimes? Like appearing drunk in public, littering or bringing in his library loans late? That's right, he'll only get sent to join the Imperial Guard! For life!

I've always wanted to check it out, but given how expensive it is I have never gotten around to it. If you do play, let me know what you think.

I use to play 40k and warhammer fantasy.
I have a 2000pt army. Though a good game Its expensive and time consuming. I found that i could only play and piant if i was unemployed but if im unemployed i cannot afford new units.
To have a decent army would cost you about £120 at least. £20 for 20 basic plastic infantry. You will need about 3 to 4 of these.
Special charictors like leaders, seers, chaplins and other nice figures would cost about £5 a blister pack. Then there are the Tanks and other armour.
Dont get me wrong, Its a good game and a rewarding one if you take pride in your painting, the historyand back ground are prtty cool as well. But the down side is its expencive, Its hard to move about unless you fork out for a couple of carry cases (£25 each) not as many books as battletech.
Dont ask me to compare it with battletech. They are two compleatly different games.
Hope this helps.

Nightmare has it pegged. Ive seen, I dont know what you would call them...squads, platoons, detachments, sold for about $20-$25 for a at least a dozen, if not more of them. Course, its been a while since Ive priced them, so that could have gone up or down. They also sold tanks and other 'big' units individually, and those would cost depending on how big it was.

How long did a typical game take? Did it have a lot of depth, or did people always use the same strategies?

Ohh yeah the game is stratigic and stratergys come in many different forms.
Most games can be won before the game starts in thoery by choosing the right units for the right situation.
There are loads of different armys and all have different styles of fighting.
Marines are a nice all round, good at range and close combat same as the Eldar.
The Tyrinids (imagine a mixture of Aliens and starship troopers) and Orcs have hardly any ranged skills and rely heavly on getting to the enemy as soon as posible to rip um up, up close.
Tau and the Imperial Guard rely heavly on firepower and tanks to destroy them before they get close.
Its getting the right combo and using them to there best.
As for length of the games, I've played some lasting 2 hours to 6 hours. depends on the size of the battle.

If you are serious about this game, I wouls suggest searching E-Bay for army deals.
The game resembles Mech warrior dark ages in the general structure of the turn, but has many many options, which tend to make every battle unique.

It all depends on who plays and what.
We could easily spend six or eight hours on a battle between two 2,000 point armies. The rules are supposedly more streamlined today...
The strategy used depends on your objectives and your forces. The latest edition I played dealt out Objective cards to both sides before play. Kill the enemy commander, drive 50% of the enemy off, blah blah blah. Strategy Cards were available too, with perks such as late deployment, flanking manuevers and such. Some could be played on the enemy, for example a card that just made a squad show up late.
With Space Orks (my favorites) you generally charge into the fray, trying to swamp the enemy with sheer numbers. They were cheap since they didn't carry much gear. It was not uncommon for me to field a hundred greenskins against twenty Space Marines. If I got close enough to really pour on the massed fire I won.
The Space Marines are fearsome warriors, genetically and surgically altered for use as Imperial elite troops. Powered armor, good weaponry, lots of support guns and access to all kinds of equipment. Very mobile. These guys, when properly used, could take down any opposing force. If you just stood and fired they died with their boots on, though.
Then there's psionics too. Still, I thought 40K was much more balanced than WH Fantasy Battle. There are tough individuals, but they seldom manage to destroy the opposing army on their own. Watch out for Eldar armies with an Avatar of their war god, though. It's perfectly capable of ripping tanks to pieces in close combat.

A few more questions (the last, I promise):
Is the unit tracking pretty streamlined, or is it cumbersome? For example, is a unit typically just a single collection of hit points, or do players have to worry about every space marine's left ankle, targeting gear, weapons jamming, etc.?
Also, for to-hit purposes does 40K put more emphasis on position and cover or can units generate movement mods that make them untouchable?

Single troopers all have their own "hit points", called Wounds. Most common troops could sustain only a single wound apiece. Weapon hit - check weapon against toughness - roll armor save - apply wounds.
Foot troopers couldn't really move fast enough to get any modifiers for movement, but vehicles could get something like a -1 to hit. Significant on a d6, but not impossibly bad. Cover is where it's at for the average troops. Get the enemy into a crossfire where several squads can gun him down while taking only limited return fire.
Commanders and other personalities could at times be tough enough and buffed enough (force fields, psionics etc) that you had to bring in heavy weapons to kill them. Tanks and dreadnought suits too, of course. It's what they're made for.
You really should check it out from the makers themselves, you know. http://www.gamesworkshop.com/
Nice info here too:

I also play Warhammer and Warhammer 40k. I've found that comparing either to BattleTech or even MechWarrior Dark Age (cringe) is like comparing apples and steaks. BT is a much, much more indepth game, while Warhammer is a game for a bigger war. And yes, warhammer is much more expensive, considering that the rules are about 45$ canadian, a squad box (with 10 to 20 figs) is 40$, the blisters of 1 or 2 figs run from 10$ to 25$, and some of the vehicles can get up to 75$, or more.
If anyone feels like starting into Games Workshop games, start small. That way, you don't give your bank account a hemmorage. _________________ All fear Squiggy!
