I have been playing around with some designs of mechs from the 3025 book that maounted ac/5's and putting lac/5's in their place and then converting the left over tonnnage in to either more weapons or armour.
Has any body messed around with this before, and would anybody like to see some of my conversions?
The LAC lackes the range but the weight savings are well worth it in my playing style.

i have messed around with the idea before. if i recall correctly, lacs like acs can use special ammunition also. if that is true, then mounting an lac is not a bad switch off. even on a 3025 design, a lac is a good weapon. the extra ton or 2 can be used to mount an extra ml, heat sink, or armor. all in all a good trade off IMHO.

Well i think that the lighter AC's need revamping anyway with either increased damage or lighter wieght. I would use LAC's more often but because they are lvl 3 i tend not to.
I do like them though. Anything to make the AC5 and 2 better is ok in my books. As you can mount a large laser with 3 heat sinks comparable to the wieght of an ac2 plus ammo.

The best way to improve the smaller caliber autocannons is to make the AC/2 into an AC/4, and an AC/7 into an AC/7. The AC/7 does almost as much damage as a Large Laser with a lot less heat and better range. Of course, it's considerably heavier than the laser and requires an ammo supply, so things are still balanced. The AC/4 still does comparatively limited damage, but four points is definitely a dent on a light or medium 'mech.
Try using a Jagermech with these rules; the 'mech actually becomes a very dangerous fire support unit.
As for LACs, I'm not really too fond of 'em. I'd rather have a heavier weapon with better range and damage.

Would you have to upgrade the AC/10 then? to a 12? or 15? _________________ If ignorance is bliss, then why are you so miserable?

I don't think so personally.

No they remain balanced enough, the original AC10 wieghs 12tons, there is roughly 3 tons between each weapon, and at least withg the 4 and 7 damage rules the AC2 and 5 would be worthwhile placing onl ighter mechs.
I likeed my little owens fire support mech with duel UAC2's. It looked good but was absolutley useless. It did a maximum of 8 damage. So it struggled to defeat a stinger, at least with the 4/7 damage its effectively doubled in firepower.
It made me laugh that the AC2, apparently shooting high explosive, armour piercing shells did the same amount of damage as a burst of machine gun fire.
