4 LCF-R20 Lucifers and a pair of CHP-W10 Chippewa Fighters.
VS
1 Leopard Dropship, and 1 Leopard CV Dropship, and 6 Sparrow Hawks.
Can anyone give me a rough dollar value of what each unit involved in this fight costs, and what it would take for the first group to have scored a "Victory" over the 2nd.
Who would you vote for if you had to pick sides.
Edit
BV Force 1
Lucifer LCF-R20, BV 1441 *4
Chippewa CHP-W10, BV of 1487*2
= 5764+2974 = 8738 BV
BV Force 2
Leopard, BV 2579
Leopard CV, BV 1745
SparrowHawk SPR-5H, BV 634*6
= 3804 = 8128
Its an atmosphere fight, I'm tempted to refight it in space... then I realise that I'd lose my soul if I gamed that hard. And the Psi Cops will put me into therapy and/or kill me because I have a humanity score of 0.

It depends in which contest.
Presumablly,if you got a DS your goal is to drop to the ground.
In atmosphere DS are very vulnerable.
STK,and LCF are very nasty design anyway.
DS got a good screen formed by SPH,
and they got a good damage threshold
even if classified as light.
Did you calculate BV??

I've not done a BV calculation yet, it was more a spur of the moment idea.
I was looking to see if anyone had their BS 2 handbook handy and could give me the c-bill cost on everything.

Lucifer LCF-R20 costs 2,799,261 C-bills, BV 1441
Chippewa CHP-W10 costs 5,265,530 C-bills and has a BV of 1487.
Nasty group.
Leopards, this depends on which version looks OK to you. There's several tries to enter it in HmAero, and I'm not sure which is the best...
Leopard(obsolete): 171,358,128 C-bills, BV 2579
Leopard CV(obs.): 167,542,128 C-bills, BV 1745
I'll assume you want the SparrowHawk SPR-5H, costing 1,740,879 C-bills and having a BV of 634.

Battle basically goes like this. Chippewa's just hammer one of the sparrowhawk's and start to straf the flank of the Leopard Dropship, staying out of the targeting window for the most part of the CV.
The remaining 5 Sparrowhawk's gamely try to play tag against the 4 Lucifers. The Lucifers have little success against them but down 1 and force 3 to retreat eventually. The Leopard CV tries to get in to whack on the Lucifers, but all four of them nail one armour location before pulling back to the furball against the SparrowHawks.
The Leopard is forced home with heavy damage but the Leopard CV covers its retreat back to Davion lines. 2 SparrowHawks bite the bullet, while 3 are damaged, and one flies home fine.
None of the Chippewas, or Lucifers are more than armour dented as they're armoured to the extreme.
SparrowHawk's are fast and shifty fighters but a Lucifer has enough armour to use its one Medium Laser pointed Aft to hammer any Chasing Sparrowhawk and still pound on the CV dropship when they want to.
The 2 Chippewas just smash the SparrowHawk formation in the begining missing most of the shots but droping a Sparrow out of the sky. Then proceed to just bleed the Leopard, trying to use flank speed and good piloting to avoid the CVs shots.
I'd put my Money on the dropships most days, but today the fact that they only had light weight Aerospace scouts that couldn't stop the Lucifer quad even with a one machine advantage. Against the Assault Chippewas the SparrowsHawks can't do more than scratch the aft paint as the Chippewas mount decent aft weaponry.
The only downside I can see to the Chippewa/Lucifer group is that they're not the fastest thing around but that much armour means they're dang tough, compared to the usual fragile Aerospace fighters. If I had my chops I'd tear out the 2 Small Lasers and mount all (2(+1 to replace the smalls) Mediums aft on the Chippewa.

When defending dropships I'd go with medium fighters at the very least. Corsairs, for example.
BTW, why was there only six fighters around the Leopards? The CV carries six, and the standard Leopard can carry two.

Leopard had a door malfunction and couldn't launch its pair of Cosairs.
He had them flying a mission somewhere else, guarding something else.
Either way I spent part of the fight expecting 2 more fighters to launch on me and catch me flat footed.
I don't have an answer but either way, but I won that one shot engagement.
Either way I don't think he was expecting me to have any aerospace, so he tried to push through and then decided to leave before he got CLG written across everyone.

I'll fill you in with a few thoughts on how this came to pass. It was roughly a 9k BV fight. My job was to defend an objective and force him off.
He probably expected me to have a strong mech force and anti aircraft stuff, since he didn't expect me to fight him in the air.
I had about infantry to guard the objective... if he'd got a single unit to the ground, or overflew the objective and realised how short on ground units I was... he would have just landed his force where ever and marched to take the place.
I decided to invest everything in Aerotech and oppose his landing, and it worked mostly.

Air mobility definitely wins battles. I designed a VTOL Arrow IV platform; got the idea from reading about the Apache Longbow choppers the army uses to kill tanks. Essentially I just took a Yellow Jacket, ripped out the Gauss Rifle and a ton of armor, and mounted an Arrow IV launcher with two tons of ammunition. As long as I have fuel for the choppers, I've got a mobile artillery platform that can outrun most 'mechs.
Aerospace fighters are obviously the premier unit to have; light fighters are good interceptors and recon units. Medium fighters I find I can use in just about any situation, depending on the precise design. They make good pickets around a Dropship or Warship. Heavy fighters I use primarily for Dropship busting or defense. Ever see a Kirghitz take on a Leopard?
Fighters suffer from one serious defect however; they need an airfield or orbiting Dropship to launch from; if you're fighting on a planet denying the enemy airfields can be of critical importance. Fighters coming in from Dropships have a limited loitering time in the atmosphere as getting back to orbit gulps up a lot of fuel. After battlemech factories or repair facilities, a major airfield is the most valuable prize on most planets.
When defending a planet, do you prefer to intercept in the atmosphere or in space? Personally, if I've only got enough resources to do one or the other, defending in the atmosphere has a lot of advantages, as it makes Dropships a lot more vulnerable; and you can also take some nice shots against any hot-drops the enemy might attempt. If you do choose to defend in the atmosphere though, make damn sure you know where the enemy plans to land; otherwise he might land outside of the effective area of the surface of the planet you can cover. Of course, interception in space is problematic too; misjudge the effects of gravity and you could miss the target by millions of miles, especially in deep space.

Given a choice, I use Heavies to fly Bar Cap patrols (Barrier patrols) so that enemy fighters can't get air superiority but usually I just let Lighter enemy fighters get by and engage my ground defences and get bush wacked.
Personal preference is to cover a continent and let the enemy figure out how to take it from me, rather than defend a planet.
of course most employers prefer to let me defend a planet rather than a continent, but I'm an attack specialist not a pansy defence man.
Always the atmosphere. That way you get the dropship gaurentied and you salvage most of your pilots. Rather than space where the dropship is easy salvage and your pilots die.
Typed a reply without answering the question, silly me.
