Just got this one today. The idea is that youre a pirate, englishman, or spaniard in the Carribean, and the gold is everything. The ships are a Styrine (sp) plastic, pretty much the same stuff that your credit card or library card is made of, so these things can take some abuse without bending or warping. The ships snap together in a few seconds, and can be 'popped back' into their cards for storage.
A package comes with two (random) ships, an island, some gold and a couple of 'crew' for your ships. It also has a rule book so you can get going right away.
Not a bad little set up for less than 10 bucks. I paid about $6 or $7, but thats canadian.

I hope certain people never see these.
Some of my gamer crew were quite fond of the Pirates game for the C64, something I never understood. They'd likely drop BattleTech for this!

I may have to check that one out. I have been trying to get my wife into some of these games and Pirates might be right for her. We had a ball playing Black Kat on the PS2. Great 2 person pirate ship action in that game.
AHOY THERE!!!

For the price, its not too bad. And if it turns out youre really not interested in the game, you havent spent too much on it.
More info can be found at www.wizkidsgames.com
Just click on the Pirates link on the right side of the page. Its also got a larger version of the rule book for you to DL and print off, for all you old foagies out there. (ducks behind his desk)
Oh, and be careful of the d6 they send with it. Its only a few milimeters across. I kid you not!

You forgot that the packs also come with one of those itty bitty playing dice! I love those little things. No one lets me use them though. One person threatened to swallow'em if I tried using'em. Of course they only throw the dice in so they can claim that a single pack is all you need to actually play.
As for the game, the packs are generally 3-4$ US. Any more than that and you're being robbed. If they dropped the book & dice from the pack they could probably drop the price a little more, but we can't have that now can we? The game itself isn't too bad. I think 'official' games aren't suppose to run longer than a 1/2 hour, which really, is generally more than enough time given how the game plays. I think they've posted up rules for when playing more than 2 people in a game on the Wizkids site now too.

The die is just hilarious, when you see it. Smaller than your average pencil eraser. The multiplayer rules look interesting, but unfortunately, Im the only one playing, so far as I know. Of course, the box o' packs at the game shop his half empty.....
I also like the "gold you loot is yours to keep" thing. Most players would buy more packs simply to get better ships, better crews, and better loot, but when you HAVE to replace your cash after a bad string of games, its just incentive.
A league would be very interesting to play in, and maybe when some more people get involved, I might have to look into starting one.......

I have a pack of those dice. They are smaller than a single pea.

I have some in my Battletech box. They have been unused for quite a while. The set I have are the most unfavorable dice for BT I have ever seen. A friend of mine used them once and barely hit anything (even with pulse lasers) and didn't make a single piloting role.

Well after investing 4 packs of this wonderful game. I went out and trounced DarkAdder's fleet twice. Collecting a nice chunk of his change.
So far I like the game, but it'll get more complicated if they're more than just 2 people playing.

Aye, that he did. I was expecting him to make a run for the loot. Instead, he just blasted my piddly fleet to smithereens, THEN looted the islands.
The second game, he hauled out the BIG FRIGGIN BATTLESHIP and proceeded to go to town on my ships again.
An interesting game, and I think multiplayer rules would make things more challanging.

I feel if there are things I can get at any time, AND enemy ships lurking around. That the proper target is to nail the opponents fleet before worrying about real estate.
There are exceptions to the rule, but not when the fleets are relatively even.

Great, so I need two fleets. One to grab the loot, and the other to screen the first. Do you know how much thats going to cost me?!?

Well, the 'keep the gold' thing is actually an optional rule. Though I believe it needs to be stated before hand so people know otherwise you could have some upset people. Personally I prefer to keep what I have. It's just another way for a gaming company to suck money out of people. Not to mention that it also, in its own way, promotes gambling for kids. Which is kinda dumb. Oh, and we can't forget how it also seems to promote violence as well as the official rules seems to state that any problems to which players have in settling a dispute should be settled by having the players think how a pirate might settle it and then do so.
