They're the missing link in the evolution between battlemech and battlearmor.

They were developed by Smoke Jaguar just prior to Operations Bulldog and Serpent. The idea is if you make a mech that is 1/10th the size, you only need 1/10th the material.
The drivers for the mechs were culled from the clan aerospace program, which has been widely accepted as a flop next to IS aeropilots. However, their small stature and overal physical hardiness makes them ideally suited to piloting ProtoMechs. Once they were fitted with the Enhanced Immaging net, they were ready to go. Granted, the EI causes a gradual deterioration of the nervous and mental health of the pilot, medication and support of the rest of the point can keep the worst of these symptoms in check.
The Protos mout various light weapons, small lasters, machine guns and the like. Missile weapons are mounted on a weight-per-tube basis, rather than a full rack. Thus, its not uncommon to see a proto mountin an SRM-3, or an LRM-7. Protos dont mount much in the way of armor, so they tend to die kind of fast. On the plus side, due to their size and speed, sometimes a shot is a 'near miss' rather than a hit.
Ive seen them and have been thinking about using them, but Im not sure as to how effective they would be.

You won't have any more supernovas.
You're in the Lyran Alliance now. And you don't have any Protomechs either, not in the Lyran Alliance at least. You can get four legged battlearmour though.

Get a clue.

The details on 'em are in the 3060 tech readout. The art's really bad though.

Lighten up, Erenon.
Protos are pretty much a crusader clan weapon, though. The IS doesnt have anything close to the EI that the clans use. The closest I know of is the Direct Nerual Interface, DNI, from the MechWarrior module 'Unbound'. That, and no house is willing to risk their pilots like that. Even if they arent killed in combat, the neural interface gradually turns their brain into scrambled eggs.

He's getting it. Of course, they're also in league with the Combine. That neutrality thing is just a load for the gullible. And One Eye, make sure you don't send that over an HPG. You can't trust the Wobblies not to be reading your mail.

Also, one of the side effects of the Aeropilot phenotype is a drastic reduction in the negative symptoms associated with the EI implants. Don't ask me why though....
