Some of the newer mechs do remind me of F1 cars. Incredibly fast and advanced, as long as they work. When they blow up you need a crew of specialists to put them back together. While the humble Lada can be serviced by anyone with two opposing thumbs.

the thrashcan is the perfect companion for anyone.
sure its slower than a dump truck, but its finese, pure brutality and pure simplicity ranks it high up on my list.
Like Nightmare said, anyone with 2 opposable thumbs can fix up the thrashcan.

Why do you need assaults? You can munch up a heavy with more firepower than some assaults....

Assults do see alot of use, especially in the novels.
It also depends on the mission parameters, as well. If youre going to take a panet away from someone, you use the biggest damn guns youve got, and that typically involves your assault designs. The down side to that is assaults take up alot of space in your dropships. Yeah, I know, a mech bay is a mech bay, but when you have to move that much inertia, youre going to burn alot of fuel.
Mediums and 'light' heavies are good for quick bash-n-dash raids. Situations where you have to get in fast and bug out before the locals are on to you.
If you really want to see assaults overused, check out Mechwarrior 4 online. EVERYONE is running a [CENCORED] Daishi.

I think Mektek have changed all that, there is alot of variation in the play now. I dominated a field of heavies and assaults in a strider. Mounting SRM's and Heavy Med lasers. They find it hard to track a speedie mech.

I also have noticied this.Assaults are used a heck of a lot more than mediums.I beliee they are being overused also.
