Question.
However I must ask it.
Just how common is it/easy is it for a clan mechwarrior to have a non standard configuration on his Omni mech?
As a bonus question what clans field front line fighters in 2nd line units?

What do you mean in the second question? Front Line Mechwarriors? If so, I don't think any of them do.

I'm not sure how common it is for Clanners to customize their Omnis. I've seen it mentioned that they're not allowed to, but that just doesn't make much sense to me. They're OmniMechs after all, and no one is concerned about overworking the techs. You modify them to the exact needs of the situation. That's the whole purpose behind the Omni concept. If you're stuck with four configurations, and none is right for the situation, then the Clan might very well lose warrior and 'Mech both, and gain nothing. Losing people isn't a problem for the Clans, but losing them for no reason is. That's wasteful, and the Clans abhor waste.
On the second question: what do you mean by front line fighters? Trueborns? Zane Nova Cat was trueborn, he was in a second-line unit.

In the book "The Way of the Clans", I think we saw Aiden making his own kit fox configurations. I think it was just a simulator but it was a practice for configuring a real mech. I may have remembered this wrong because it was a while since I read it.

OmniFighters, then. I thought it might have meant that, but I wasn't sure, and "front line warriors" seemed more to fit the first question.
I'd say that the Snow Ravens almost definately field OmniFighters in their second line units. And very probably the Cloud Cobras too, who have a similar concentration on aerospace tech.

Hey, here's one, since we're on the subject. Do Combine MechWarriors get to use custom configs for their OmniMechs?

My guess is only if you're in favour and/or you're in one of the elite units (ie the Genyosha, Sword of Light, Otomo, etc.)

I'd say it has to do with commander's discression for both Clanners and DCMS. Of course, Clanners can always challenge any decision to a trial of grievance. _________________ "The enemy's gate is down."

When the CO orders B company to scramble equipped for X conditions there'd better be enough of the right guns. No, he's not going to approve if someone is using all the spare medium pulse laser modules on his custom omni. Others need them too.
A well-run unit isn't going to keep an extra boatload of omni modules just so warriors can experiment. It's the same stuff, sure, but it's still an extra. More storage space, less room for other stuff.
I'd guess it's easier to do your own config when the unit is running out of modules due to combat damage and supply problems. It might not be the config you want, but you get to do your own.

Well, you can do your own config, but all we've got are AC/2 and small laser pods. Have fun boys.
Oh yeah, and we're out of ammo for the AC/2s. _________________ "The enemy's gate is down."
