Something that has never been clear to me was when (if at all) do you apply movement related modifiers to piloting checks.
Example 1: A pilot jumps over a ridge into a line a fire and takes a pounding; 20+ pts of damage, a gyro hit and a foot actuator hit. With a pilot skill of 5, this guy is making 3 rolls at 5 + 1 + 3 + 1 = 10. The fact he jumped has no bearing, correct?
Example 2: A mw runs up to an opponent who moved 4 hexes. In the physical attack phase the warrior takes a swing. Here movement modifiers do apply but not the pilot skill. So the target number is 4 (punch base) + 2 (run) + 1 (4 hexes) = 7. Correct? _________________ "No good deed goes unpunished." - Michael Garibaldi

Example 2 isn't a pilot check. It's merely a physical attack. Movement modifiers themselves will never apply to piloting skill checks. Only the damage you've taken applies to a piloting skill check.

I think it is I was taught wrong many years ago and could never find it supported in documentation.

i thought you only had to make one pilot check per turn, the effects in that turn are added together for a single roll.

to my knowledge you roll for each event that requires you to roll a pilot check, each roll modified by all effects occuring that round.
This if you were kicked for 20pts of dmg resulting in a leg actuator crit. then your rolling three times for it.
to me it represents that the pilot has to counter each effect while at the same time incuring compounding effects. i mean it is easier to stay standing after your kicked in RL then it is if that kick hit your knee and brused it. First your trying to regain your balance after the force of the kich, then trying to get back off the heels of feet on a sensitive knee. if one dosen't get you, the other may.

That's what the book says.
It's not what we do around here, though. Mechs fall often enough that we only roll once for shooting and once for the physical phase. Seems easiest that way.
