Yep, more questions.
Where do you get the ideas for custom 'Mechs you design? Are they based on fluff? Or is fluff based on them? Do you do a lot of your own 'Mechs, or do you do more variants of pre-existing 'Mechs?
Most of my designs are based on pre-existing designs, usually canon ones. Generally, I throw a design into TDB, and tweak it till I think it's better. Occassionally it doesn't work out, but quite often I get something relatively new. This is also how I make IICs. Fluff almost always evolves around a design after it's created, with greater or lesser originality depending on what pops into my head at the time.
I do occasionally come up with a new 'Mech, to do something specific that no other 'Mech quite does, or that no other 'Mech does well.

Random wanderings...
Crazy ideas like: "Can i fix a MRM 40 on a 40 ton mech?"
Improvement ideas: "Why FF armour????"

I tend to make my own designs, mainly because I don't have any templates to work with from existing designs because I use the Drawing Board. (Unless there are some that I never found.)
I really just make mechs for fun, so I don't have any grand scheme to thinking up ideas.

Much of my work is original from the ground up My clan designs are usually built for either the Ice Hellions or the Cloud Cobras . Some are omnis based on cannon designs like the Blizzard 9Based on the Ice Storm or the Ice Hellion (based on the Snow Fox others are built from the ground up :Ice Guardian ultra-light and Yeti medium for the ice hellions and the Wayfinder light Sightblinder medium and Apocalypse assault for the Cloud Cobras. I also have a few IICs for the Cloud Cobras I frequently come up with a lot of variants for my omnis...there are 20 for the Blizzard!
My non clan designs are built mostly for the Outland Alliance a custom outer periphery realm the vast majority of these are light and ultra-lights to fit the fluff (their is a brief history posted in the Fiction Forum (O.K maybe not so brief)look for "Outer Periphery Nation: Outland Alliance. I like to use multiple variations of the same chassis Much of my armour is actually designed to match the look of some toys that I bought to use for miniatures. Most of my designs for them are ground up custom. I like fast lights and the majority on my designs are lights and ultra-lights. I use the HeavyMettal programs and have HMPro,HMVee and HMAero.

i mostly work things from a single concept eg ppc lrm boat etc and any fluff is pretty much a gradual build up that i add to the design over time
