A long time ago in a school not so far away...

Several students and friends waisted away many hours roleplaying. They sat around the lunch tables with there dice, a 32oz soda, and a few game books. Life was good.

however, the game system was not. They tried as they could to make sense of the ill described game system as they plodded along. Finally, they graduated and assembled joyously at each others houses for bigger games. Yet, as had occured many times before, the system left them confused and uncertain. They faught there battles and rolled there skills. The performed there manuvers as best they could. but life was not happy to leave them be, they asked questions and saught answers. however, no answers were to come. So in the end they left, unhappy and annoyed, never to play the game again. for in there eyes, the system lacked the feel they saught. always leaving them with more questions then answers.

This is our story and my quest. it is a hope that a light will shine forth unto those lost in the darkness of displeasure and questions.

I used to play Robotech by Palladium. It was fun, but we often incountered problems. Any body else incountered the same? Has Palladium ever released a compendium of in depth explination of its rules and combat system?

My gripes were always this:
1] it seemed that P.P. was the only attribute worth wild.
2] what use were attributes if the only ones that gave you anything were 18+?
3] the combat system always lacked enough detail to get a grasp of it.
4] the characters who took the most H-H Skills and Physical Skills became uber in combat.
5] units always seemed harder to kill then they did in the show. could a unit that takes less then 100% to main body be considered tacticaly destroyed?

what did anyone else think about the system?

Having played Palladium games for years I can answer some of these questions.
Only after the main body is destroyed can the whole unit be considered destroyed.
If you and your grroup thinks that PP was the only reall attribute then your game master wasn't running much more than an evolving bar brawl.
Attributes 16+ get bonuses.
I agrree the combat system was rather clunky, but once you got a grasp of it it was real easy to keep flowing.
I also agree on the uber fighters. However combat isn't the whole game. These uber fighter(I've Gm'ed a few of em) are usually only good for combat and intimidating thugs and suspects.

I have played Robotech, Palladium, Rifts, Heroes Unlimited, and Ninja and Superspies. Still have the books too.

Am currenty writing a story about a Wolfen from Palladium who got rifted to the world of Rifts. And I will take him beyond those to other worlds, picking up comrades each time.

I also have the Palladium, Heroes Unlimited and a couple of Rifts Books. We played all the time back in the day.
Rifts was the most painful with the stat issues. The others weren't bad.

I've played a Wolfen, and loved it. An Ogre too. I still have him...

My friends and I had a 3 person group we used a lot. We had a gnomish knight (i know it's against the rules but I was GMing and allowed it) named Fidget, 2 Ogre knights named Spic and Span. The gnome rode a Clydesdale size horse while the two Ogres carried their horses under their arms. It was great funn when jousting occured. Imagine your run-of-the-mill human knight spur his horse and gallop down the lists. Then you look the other way and see a 14' tall ogrge carrying his horse come running down the lists. One of our best moves was gnome flinging. We ould put the gnome on a lance or staff (long story how this got started) and fling him over the enemy's heads.

Gnome flinging was one of our way of room searching.... Open Door, In goes Gnome, Close Door, Listen for screaming....

A story related to me involved throwing a gnome at a dragon...

It ends with the dragon getting a cold, sneezing, setting off a powder charge, and leveling a city.

The group of people I hang around with are all avid gamers. We have tried almost every system, including ADnD, DnD 3rd ed, D20 star wars, white wolf, even MW2 and MW3. Our overall favourite is palladium, simply because of the limitless possibilities, and the ease at bringing in stuff from everywhere (had one where a robot pilot got his hands on a full-on battlemech. That was a mistake).

I see you play more than just battletech as well, Warhammer 3025?

Yeah, the whole experience ended baddly for everyone. Absolutely everyone.
