Hi guys,
I just checked out the CBT website for the first time in over a year...
...and to my great surprise I read that they are redoing my favourite lvl2 TRO: 3055! (Notice, I specify lvl2 - nothing will ever compare to TROs 3025/26) Please check out my views on this volume in this ancient thread:
http://www.mordel.net/barandgrill/viewtopic.php?topic=1449&forum=1
Well, well, well. It seems that TRO: 3055 has become the 2nd readout which now contains a whole bunch of unseens! What a pity! It includes some of my favourite designs: the Kraken (for sheer lunacy of design and quirkiness of look) springs up to mind instantly. I may have to acquire a couple of these through ebay, before prices skyrocket!!
So they are redoing them, and all the artwork is getting redone as well. This cannot be a bad thing.... Now PLOG has done some interesting work in recent TROs, not always to my liking, but sometimes very good.
AND: They are including the 14 Solaris VII 'mechs!!! I love Sol VII!!! One of my favourite supplements (the German edition is apparently superior!). Of course, also with new artwork. Which is a pity, because some of them were based off the japanese versions of the unseens. Basically new artwork of new artwork of the unseens, eh? A few additional Sol VII 'mechs will also be included.
(Un-)fortunately they are including lvl3 equipment on these later designs, the first time this is officially done in any TRO. It will be interesting to see how that works out. Does anyone know whether the standard configurations will remain, and the lvl3 equipment is added in the variants (apart from the fact that there was equipment like claws, cudgels and cooling pods were already standard).
Well, I always get excited at the prospect of a new TRO. And this one is using material as base that I personally like a great deal.
What do you think? Does anyone know any details? Will anyone miss any of the new unseens?

Yes, and no...my understanding (and this may be faulty, so take it with a grain of salt) is that the old images were not wholely owned by FASA so rather than take any further chances, the art is being redone...however, it seems to be being redone in such a way as to not invalidate the minis...this is why it is called an Update and not a Revised edition...
Ok, if that was confusing, just check the various previews available on Randall's BattleChats...so far, we've had images of the Dart, the Albatross, the Snake and the Grim Reaper with VERY rough sketches of the Kraken and one of the new Solaris VII designs...
BTW...you forgot to mention that TRO: 3055 Updates will also include notable pilots sections for the 'Mechs...

As I mentioned above, take a look at Randall's BattleChats...

Actually, this is not the first time, as the 2750 TRO had the Kanga with its jump jets, and the 3026 TRO had the Engineering vehicle and its drones...not to mention the fractional accounting that was used in both 3026 and the 3050 TROs originally...
And I'm not sure on the original configs or not...I think so, but alot of them had to be corrected as almost all Solaris VII designs had some errors in their design...

The miniatures will remain valid? Excellent!
(Though mind you, in between my post and your answer, I did order 2 Baboons and 1 Kraken over the net.... )
Ruger, does Randall Bills answer e-mails?
Is there any chance whatsoever of being of any influence in this book? Not in the sense of actually trying to bring in any of my own ideas?
Just asking, because I just sent him a mail to point out that the Stone Rhino/Behemoth had some variants in Ghost Bear's Legacy (old PC game). Usually I wouldn't give a damn about those, but these GBL variants actually seemed to be a genuine attempt to give the ancient Behemoth BATTLEDROID some proper stats!! _________________ "Rear armour is defeatist!" - unknown Kuritan Mechwarrior

Not to bust your bubble Ruger, but until the rules changed in the mid to late 90s or so, fractional accounting wasn't level 3 and the jump jets on the Kanaga weren't either. Nor were the two vehicles you mentioned from TR3026. ALL of that stuff was what is now level 2 back before the rules were changed. So please don't say they weren't when they were all legal to have in a standard BT game at the time.

Most, if not all, except for the IICs which were altered in TRO Project Phoenix, should be...Warner or Paul might be able to better answer that...

From what I'm aware, Randall does answer email as his able, but he gets several hundred emails a day (from fans, playtesters, etc.) and may not be able to get to it for some time...a better way might be to register on the Classic BattleTech site, and post in the "Ask the Writer" or "Ask the Precentor Martial" forums...if Randall doesn't pick up on it, one of the writers should...
However, since the variants you mention were in the old PC game, they may not be used...however, Randall does say (in his latest BattleChat) that one of the objects in TRO 3055 Updates is to give those 'Mechs that lacked variants at least one variant design, preferably two, so you never know...

At the time, you are correct...however, both the engineering vehicle and the Hi-scout drone carrier, as well as fractional accounting, are still a part of even TRO: 3026 Revised...these designs may have been grandfathered in, but I don't believe that would change their status as current level 3 designs...
Another thing is the fact that some level 3 designs and tech are mentioned in the fluff as well, so that might also be considered as including level 3 in the TRO's (although this is stretching things, I admit)...
And then there are designs such as the Exterminator and the Spector, both of which are supposed to mount the null-signature system and Chameleon light polarization field although their record sheets do not reflect that tech three material...

Okay we aren't talking about current, you said that they were level three to start with and that is not correct. They became level 3 when the rules changed. Until then they could and were used by a lot of folks in normal BT games, same with the LAMs.

All of that was fluff and as we know fluff never played a role in what the mechs or vehicles could do game wise. And unless folks were willing to allow a house rule or home ruling on the fluff tech, so again it's not level 3 for those mechs either until new rules came out.
Now it would be nice to see a lot of the level 3 tech on mechs in an offical TRO, heck it would be nice to see all of other forgotten mechs that at one time had a miniature made for them. That I would like to see.
Meanwhile I wait for TRO 3055 Updated to come out.

Here's what's going on:
The images under fire in TRO3055 and some that originally debuted in the ComStar sourcebook were created by Victor Milan studios.
Wizkids doesn't want to keep producing stuff using art not produced by themselves, their licensees or FASA. So the old VMI art's out the door.
That only means that WK, IWM and FP won't be using that art anymore. Rather than not producing any mini's for those designs, they're getting the Phoenix treatment. Meaning that some variant of, say, the Kraken will get art which is legally different enough to qualify as original art. You can then print art for it and have mini's made based off of that, which you could then use to simulate other variants.
Meanwhile, the old art still officially exists in the BattleTech universe. If you'd ask a person in the Inner Sphere what a Kraken'd look like, he'd pick the image you see in the original TRO3055. Meanwhile, however, you're just never going to see that image published again.
Lots of detail, but I hope that answers the question.

Slim to none. Probably none. As you can read in the BattleChat, the writing for it has long since been done. Randall's working on the art and letting us peek over his shoulder. Your idea would have to get written up, and since that stop got passed, you're out of luck.

Well, it's a bit of a case of all of us being out of luck, right? It wasn't like I was trying to promote my own spin on things....
But thank you very much for your detailed answer. It all made sense! So is it a case of IWM producing a new miniature for a variant of, say, the Kraken? And if so, will the old one stay in production? Wait a minute - didn't I just say that it all made sense?
Anyways, Randall never replied to my post, and I wasn't really going to post anything at CBT, seeing as he is currently AWOL from his own board. _________________ "Rear armour is defeatist!" - unknown Kuritan Mechwarrior

IWM cannot produce mini's for art that's "Unseen" which now includes all the stuff VMI put together. So they cannot produce mini's for the standard Kraken.
They can for the one that'll end up in TRO3055.

Hey, you saw the BattleChat. That guy is insanely busy. I suspect he may not sleep at all. I'm pondering what to bribe him with that might get him to teach me how to do that.

Extreme treadnomancy.
