Not the movie or a Mech, but a browser. I saw this on the screen savers on tech TV and decided to give it a try. It works with ridiculous speed, with Explorer I wait an average of 3 or 4 seconds for a post to work despite Mordel's best efforts to keep the code lean. Firefox does the same in less than a heartbeat.

I have a DSL connection, but if I saw an improvement, I figure the dial-up guys will too.

www.mozilla.org/firefox/

if you want to give it a try.

I've been using it for a while now, and I like it. It screws up some specific IE items placed on web pages - ie. scrolling banners, but, overall, nice and stable.

I downloaded it onto my wife's computer the other day, and it's making a big difference with dial-up.

I've been thinking of getting Firefox for a while, but this time I actually did it. And it does seem to work faster. Thanks, Rarich.

And one thing: There was a movie?

I've been testing it for a couple days.

I've seen no difference between IE and FireFox in terms of speed of page loads, and so far I've not found one instance where the tabs have made any difference.

Back in the 80's, Clint Eastwood had a movie named Firefox. In it, he played a US spy/fighter pilot sent into the USSR to steal their new stealth fighter, codenamed the Firefox.

Loved the movie back then, although the scenes with the Firefox were kind of weak due to the poor CGI of the time (at least, I think they were CGI...if they were using models, the budget for special effects must have been entirely taken up with the models, leaving nothing for filming them in action). The Firefox did not real at all while in flight...

Oh, ok. I remember that one. I saw it a few years ago on some TV network or another. It wasn't too bad a movie; although apparently it wasn't good enough to be remembered by name.

Firefox does have a good pop-up blocker. I rarely, get bnothered by pop-ups, and even if they do... they aren't difficult to get rid off.

Here's a tip for those who feel confident messing around with browser settings. Speed up firefox a bit more.

Only for broadband users, though.

1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and
look for the following entries:

[network.http.pipelining ]
[network.http.pipelining.maxrequests]

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you
enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page
loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means
it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New - Integer. Name it
"nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the
amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages MUCH faster now!

Sounds good... also sounds a bit like whacking the target site with multiple requests.... multiply that by say a 1000 people...that would be 30,000 requests

Is that about right? or not?

I notice the pages working a lot faster. I do not use the tabs either. Every once in a while I get a site that uses a lot of Direct X, and firefox doesn't support that.

I don't use tabs either. I'm to used to IE's multiple windows.

Also, each IE instance seems to be about 10 megs of memory. And each window brings up another iexplore.exe. But there's only on ~20 meg Firefox .exe, no matter how many windows you've got. It burns a little more memory for each new window, but not much.

Does anyone else notice that Firefox does strange things to Heavy Metal output (written with pre or code)? It has a blank line between every line; makes posts kind of long.

I've been using Firefox for several months now; I particularly like the amount of customization that's possible with it, and also the ability to customize your security settings. When I first started using it I dug up some cookies dated to expire in 2012. Well, they're gone now, and you can set Firefox to delete the little bastards every time you close the browser. Handy little trick, and there's a lot more in there like it if you go through all the menus.

Firefox is the only browser I use, unless I have to use the other cr*p.... It works on Mac, Linux and Windows.
