Actually, we saw the Agro ship blown up in the pilot. Not necessarily the only Agro ship they have, but we saw an Agro ship blown up in the pilot.

It does take the Cylons 33 minutes to catch up, and we don't exactly know how far the fleet is jumping each time. Maybe that's the delay for an FTL message to be sent from Boomer to the Cylon Basestars.

Good point...but then again the Jedi can sense things from far away and Obi-wan seems to be able to tell that Alderran was blown up and the Emproer was able to jump into a new body etc...it's SciFi so something has to be on the hard to buy end of things other wise it wouldn't be all the fun to watch.

It the Star Wars Universe, all that was explained away. THe Force connected evey living thing in the Universe together. Here we aretalking about cold hard Physics, even if it is way into the future and Science Fiction. The fact that such complicated information can be instantly transmitted across such a vast distance is prepoperous, even for the technologically superior Cylons. Just my two cents on that matter.

Point...but then again the Cyclons have to have something special going for them, or we have a repeat of the Cyclons blundering into the Colonials when they pass an outpost, but we have yet to see a Cyclon out post and this time around the Cyclons haven't been seen or heard of in like 40 years or so and also they aren't an "alien" race of Lizards or Reptiles who have attacked Colonial allies etc...so for the plot they have this cross space tracking and essence passing ability.

The show seems to pay attention to other hard facts for the physics and more so then the original did so it evens out in the end.

Here are a couple of sites to help with the tech issues...

http://www.tecr.com/galactica/

http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Corridor/4590/

I might have a few more...and I believe that the SciFi webpage has some other sites to vist in one of their link areas.

Hmm... in the original series, there were 12 battlestars, one for each colony. In this one, they lost what was it 85 of them in the initial attack, something like a couple of hundred battestars total? Yet in the original, if I recall there were 270 some odd refugee ships and now only 50+.

The scene in the pilot where Apollo and the Pres. only tell jump capable ships where to go and leave the sublights to die is very realistic and well done. But surely if they had a couple of hundred capital warships in the navy then they could have pulled together at least that many refugee ships.

maybe there were cylons aboard and that's why so few ships escaped intact. But for my money, I think the size of the new refugee fleet is more a function of the show's budget then anything else. I think this fleet is so much smaller because it simply cost less. Either that or the writers thought it would be far more dramatic to have 50k survivors then a million or so.

Undoubtedly there were hundreds of ships, but only a fraction of them were in space (the ones on the planets would have been destroyed in the initial attack), and of that fraction (say 25%) only a significantly smaller faction would be FTL capable (say 25% again), and many of those (say, 25% again) would have been destroyed in the opening attacks since they would be close to the planets the Cylons were bombing.

So there were 1600 space ships to begin with, and most of them were destroyed before they got off the ground. It was Pearl Harbor writ large.

Considering the size and effectiveness of the Cylon attack forces, such widespread destruction seems reasonable to me.

For what it's worth, it is most certainly Sci-fi, and a fairly decent show. However, for me, I just do not like it. Reminds me of Space: Above and Beyond. I didn't like that show either. They trying to put too much realism into the show, and all I've to say about that is, it's suppose to be a TV show. If I wanted realism, I wouldn't be watching TV.

And so, in short, while it does seem to be done well, it just does not fit my taste. Too much drama, not enough fun.

My example of a better show? Stargate SG-1. While it is a bit of a drama, they at least have some fun with it. And while it might go a little over the top at times, it is also rather serious at others. So I think it balances out for the most part.

Farscape does that well also. I tend to think that Farscape did that much better than SG-1 ever has. Although I haven't been watching SG-1 recently.

As far Battlestar Galactica, I'll have to find out about that tomorrow.

Regardless, I think we should hope that the new Battlestar Galactica avoids the pitfall of the old BSG and Farscape: Stay inside your budget, guys!

I liked it but I can see I am going to be praying every episode for Baltar to get his head blown off.

Frell! I forgot all about it. That's the problem with television; I never remember to watch it.

Hey that's what Tivo or VCR or DVR is for....I am not home most Friday nights, but my wife and I make sure the Tivo is set to record the whole 3 hours of Scifi and then on Sunday we watch it and burn it to disk via the DVR.

Ya, I liked Farscape as well and was going to use that as my example instead, except that it's no longer running, so didn't seem to fit as well as a good example.

I have watched it.

I like it.

you should too unless some are afraid of WOMEN being just as 'tough' as men THINK they are.

that is if the kids can get their minds out of the females clothes and on to something else.

women are ALWAYS underestimated when it comes to combat ( thats the one thing I LOATH! when I am playing. its also the reason I wipe the floor with most everyone I play. they WANT to use the brains in their shorts instead of the one between their ears.)

That and I AM really that good.

But this time Adama\'s only got a score of Vipers? Sure the fleet is now 50 some ships instead of 200 plus. But he\'s got to mount a 24 hour patrol good enough to fight off a sudden attack. 1 shuttle and 2 Vipers just don\'t cut it for that if you see what I mean. For one thing, he hasn\'t even got enough pilots to mount recon missions or cover the rear... or the flanks... or top and bottom. They really should have and hopefully will arrange for Adama to get his hands on more birds if not more pilots.

He had at least a full squadron of Mark 2 Vipers (and who knows how big a Colonial Squadron is? From all evidence it\'s at least what we would call a wing in size)...plus any of the Mark 5\'s that had been refitted (for instance, Apollo\'s Mark V is apparently refitted)...Also, don\'t knock the Raptor...it\'s a pretty bad ass electronics warfare and scout craft...

Well, last night's episode gave us a count of what they have/had...at one point during it, they mention having 40 Vipers (before the events of the episode)...and doing a count of the number of pilots mentioned, they had 34 prior to the events in the episode...now, they have instituted a flight school for new pilots...

In the original series they end up cobbling some fighters together out of spair parts, so this number could go up.

Current count: 39 vipers, 21 (20?) pilots.

Don't know how that divides between raptors and vipers.
