I like running campaings, especially the salvage rules. A good Battletech player can take a lump of leftover 'mech and turn it into a viable combatant, IMHO.
But what about mixing weapons loads. We've all seen IS mechs that mount the odd Clan weapon, but what about the other way around? I know that very few Clanners would voluntarily be in the same -room- as an IS weapon, much less use them. But what happens when youre in a campaign, and your supplies are running a bit low.
Ammo can be exchanged relatively freely Clan LBX ammo is (for arguments sake) the same as IS LBX ammo. But can a weapon be modified from IS to Clan performance? Can you take a slavaged medium pulse laser from an IS design and give it the same range, damage, and heat profiles as a Clan medium pulse laser?
Is this modification something that could be done in the field, or does the weapon need to be remanufactured? Is it even possible? Kind of a strange question, I know, but any kind of input would be appreciated.

Changing an IS medium pulse laser into a Clan medium pulse laser would probably require complete remanufacture.
In other words: I doubt it's possible to upgrade like that. Too many parts would have to be replaced, including the main body of the weapon, most likely.

Ok, on the usage of IS weapons on a Clan chassis, it WAS done by the Smoke Jaguars. Also a lot of clans were using captured IS mechs as part of their second line forces, sometimes with weapons upgrades, sometimes without.
On to the modification of an IS weapon to clan specs.... well, it COULD be done, but the amount of parts and labor would mean its not worth it, as making a brand new clan weapon of the same type would be easier and faster. Ronin had this one pretty well covered, but I thought I\'d agree . Re-manufacturing the example laser would mean replacement of the energy feeds, focusing lens, and probably the oscillator too. So, once again, not worth it.

No, Sphere made weapons are forced to use inferior materials all thru the design. The clan Orbital Manufacture technology allows much purer laser lenses, and tighter tolerances due to better quality control (I am sure that the competition among the other clan castes is as fierce in its own wat as that among the warriors. A tech with bad work habits or a low pass rate would probably get bumped in status rapidly).
Innerspere materials technology obviously lags behind the clans as shown in the armor, structure and XL engine, among other categories.
As for clans using them, that would depend on the clan. How flexible or traditional are they? I think you would see 'Sphere tech on second line mechs only, if at all. Only a desperate or insane clan warrior would tell his tech to install such stuff. A tech would be literally dead installing this without his warriors permission.

WELLLLL I was talking about the high density cables running from the reactor to the weapon (or more likely even though it isnt covered anywhere, from the reactors power converter to the weapon). I was just assuming that like everything else, the clan's power feed circutry is better than IS as well, makes sense since the rest of their metals are more pure that they would use a more pure metal in any component, even one as simple as electrical wiring
I mean c'mon, war is their life, their machines are the best for a reason.

Sorry to seem like we were making light of your post. I would have to agree that any patch job with IS weapons onto a Clan mech would need some sort of converter. This would strictly be a second line job. The other option would be for the clan troops to sell off the acquired equipment to the black market.

Another problem would be converting I.S. tech into pods to mount on omnimechs.

volts. 240 nd 480 are common power usage in industry today. At my shop most machines were 220/240 about 7-9 years ago. Now almost everything is running 440/480. _________________ If ignorance is bliss, then why are you so miserable?

Dont worry about the silliness.
Im just curious as to if it would be feasable, or at least possible. Seeing as how the IS techies can barely remember 'red is positive, black is negative, green is ground'.
Still, some of the IS weapons would be interesting to see in a Clan version.
