I've been playing with the idea of taking the old 3025 mechs and applying upgrade kits on them.

i'm aware that many of the 3050 mechs are supposed to be such. But i'm looking at a 3067 perspective and also based on my bias about what an upgrade kit entails.

Here's my thought.

A) No change in engine. In any way.
B) No change in structure, ie no Endo Steel.
C) Heat Sinks can be changed to Double.
D) Armour to ferro fibrous sounds ok
E) Weapons should stay as close to the original load out as possible. A PPC/LB-10X/Ultra AC/10/Rotary AC/5 for an AC/10 is fine.. but not a large laser or LRM. (even the PPC needs some good explaining... like lots of heat sinks in the same location)

Hey! You stole my ideas!

I've been designing upgrade kits along just such lines. Like the BLR-2G Battlemaster in the TRO section. I've also upgraded the Locust, Stinger, Wasp (although that one didn't go very well for some reason), Spider, Clint, Pheonix Hawk, Shadow Hawk, Wyvern, Centurion, Trebuchet, Griffin, Rifleman, Warhammer, and Marauder along the same lines.

I think i need to mention here that i'm also trying ot work things from a very regional view. IE How the Draconis Combine does an upgrade kit and how the FedCOm does an upgrade kit for the same Mech are likely to be very different.

Take a look at my ENF-4R2 Enforcer. it mounts a RAC 5, a very davion/fedcom weapon. Of course the Enforcer IS a fedcom mech but if the FWL were to upgrade it, they might replace the AC/10 with a LB-10X.

The FWL is more likely to use an Ultra/10 of light gauss, I would think. This sounds like an excellent idea, especially the way you're going to do it regionally. Plus, the a number of the 3050 designs aren't that great; AS7-K, for example. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Uhmm you are aware that RS:Upgrades has more or less done this?

None the less it's an interesting idea, and if you plan to stick to upgrades for the houses using only what they have then it will prove to be interesting.

A small problem I can see. As far as I know to change the heatsinks (from single to double) that would (again IIRC) require a major over haul or a complete engine replacment altogether. But one question why does a PPC need explaning? when say a ultra10 or rotary ac (a weapon that is on the same level as the clan pulse laser imo) not need explaning?

In all honesty a field upgradekit should have everything in it you need to upgrade the mech to what your commanders have decided is appropriate for that design, which means, engine, internal strusture, sensor, packages, what ever they figure is nessary would be included, and changed.

I think he means to implement field refits. The high command has received X amount of new tech. These are then distrtibuted to the ranks in a cetain pecking order. So, say your unit received 10 LB-10X AC's with accompanying ammo supplies, 46 double heatsinks, and 12 medium pulse lasers. You take those items and work them into your existing designs. Their placement is ultimately determined by your technical staff. To my understanding this is the primary method of field refits. Get into components that require a facility to make the changes and it goes from field refit to overhaul.

I was thinking more factory produced upgrade kits designed to require as little work as possible to implement. Say a downtime of less than a week. Which is why i left out replacing structure and engine.. think that's a bit off..

As for the rest as Karagin said, heat sinks requires quite a bit of an overhaul.. but my belief is that the heat sinks to double heat sinks can be the results of replacing existing vents, cooling units that could result in additional space taken up (when the engine is too small to hold all the heat sinks..). It will require serious work, but i believe it can be done (or the few episodes of American Choppers got to me.. )

Karagin: "But one question why does a PPC need explaning? when say a ultra10 or rotary ac (a weapon that is on the same level as the clan pulse laser imo) not need explaning?"

Good point... ok. they ALL need explaining :-p

Swapping heatsinks for doubles would require a factory at least. Which isnt ideal in the field of battle unless the commander in question has a few of his own and can devote the time and manpower to defend it from raiders.

the downtime for the mech can be long as a week or even 2 weeks ! depending how many heatsinks it carries.

I don't think it needs a factory. But it WILL need a decent Mech Bay and competent techs. Something which most House units SHOULD have access to.

As for the week, yeah that's what i said didn't i?

What i need is the MW RPG or some other source that has repair times and the like...

Uhmm...Stinger asked that not me....I pointed out that the RS Upgrades had more or less done what you are doing, though not as a single X weapon change out on a mech...
