Last night I had my first battle against a live opponent (one I met in a chat room). We agreed on a dual of 25-tonners. Me in my ever-loving COM-2D Commando and him in his favorite light, an HNT-151 Hornet. The terrain was 3x6 standard mapsheets, randomized. We each started on directly opposing sides, me in the West, and him in the East.

The opening turns were all movement, trying to position ourselves into attacking range (easier for him than me, what with his range advantage). Thankfully, a deep lake was near the middle of the map, which I happily dove into, down to depth level 2, and used as cover. After I emerged, he (naturally) tried to keep me at a distance, but I started setting small fires with my laser, filling much of the area with intermittent smoke. Now that his LRM was next to useless (he couldn't target me through the smoke), he had to rely on his jump jets to try and outmaneuver me. Thankfully, there wasn't much intervening terrain (high ground and such), so it was mostly cat-and-mouse among the smoke fields. Eventually, he fell when my final SRM-4 volley took out his left leg, and two of his jump jets with it. A medium laser blast to his rear center-torso finished him.

Huzzah!
