I'll cop the point, but I really don't see the problem with arbitrarily upping the rate of fire.

A Browning .50 HMG has a higher rate of fire than it's 19th century predecessor the Colt .30 Autorifle (potatoe digger). Over time, the technology gets better.

I just don't use them because I think the risk of a jam outweighs the potential benefits.

like someone mentioned, UACs always jam on me, especially the larger calibres. At least with the RAC, the pilot can try to fix the problem but in the UAC, once its jammed, its jammed period.

hehe I dont have a problem with jamming. I just cant get the buggers to HIT. I can miss needing 4's with an ac 20. that is why I rarely use them.

I usually get the first round in but never the second, problem is its very tempting to try an double your damage, especially on the UAC20

I'd have to dig out the fiction, but the novels are inconsistent as well if my memory serves me correctly. Some suggests long burts of shells (most actually) but I seem to recall some suggesting the image of a single large shell being fired by the AC.

I have a theory (when do I not?)

Some autocannon designs fire single large explosive shells very accurately (say the AC 5 on the Shadow Hawk, that long gun on the shoulder).

Other versions fire several smaller shells with less accuracy. (like the AC 20 on the Hunchback).

AC # is just a way to standardize all the types of ACs according to average damage.

Thus, depending on the designer, the contradrictory books could be right.

That's my take on it. A high velocity cannon is better for armor piercing, but expensive to make, A low velocity can make up the difference with lots of shells. So both do the same amount of damage, one make 1 or 2 serious hits, the other scrubs of the same amount of armor, but doesn't penetrate. Same net damage.

I have read novels where they "wait for the ammo casette to load", "walk the burst into the infantry", and "fire the longest burst ever". So I make the assumption that there is a wide variance in designs, and the canons are grouped according to damage.

If he meant High Velocity, then it makes sense. Ther are low, medium, high velocity classes of guns. The low velocity guns are cheap to make and are like a howitzer. High Velocity guns are like those on tanks and require special alloys/ processes for strength.

a high velocity gun of the same caliber as a low velocity gun has a flatter trajectory, and more penetration, it is a good anti-armor gun. The low velocity gun 'shoots like a rainbow' but can pack a lot more HE in its shells, so it is better at 'shelling'.

There are enough varients to make the AC Rules very complex. I figure that the game designers in their 'infinite wisdom' decided to class them by damage rather than features.

Some current automatic weapons can vary their rate of fire- even more than doubling it. For short bursts, the rate can be upped, but it will have a lower ROF for longer bursts. This is for a couple of reasons-
1: it runs through ammo much faster
2: the recoil builds up quickly
3: after about two seconds of firing the gun heats up like a stove-top burner
4: the gun often- you guessed it- jams.

A lot of weapons can have their rate of fire manually or electronically adjusted- some are even designed to do it automatically.
A few years ago, I assisted a Gunner\'s Mate in the CG; our vessel had a 25 mm chaingun (probably similar to an AC/2). It had a variable rate of fire, and did pretty well firing slowly, but jammed _every_time_ we tried to fire faster. Looks like the design hasn't changed much.

I dont much care what the fluff says about em. Ive had some good shots and some bad jams with the UAC's, so I can go either way on this one.
As long as the blipping thing hits what I aim at, it can shoot ping pong balls, for all I care.

I have the same problem with Gauss Rifles, I can never roll better than 5! AC20's i have better luck with unless its on a mech with a Gauss. In which case it suffers from Gaussriflitis! As do all the weapons.
